Kina Kasuya Grannis (born August 4, 1985 in Mission Viejo , California ) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist .

Life

Kina Grannis grew up in Mission Viejo , California . Already in elementary school she composed simple piano works and thus competed in regional competitions. She played the violin in the school orchestra and carried it on into high school. At the age of 15 she taught herself to play the guitar; it is their primary instrument to this day.

Career

Kina Grannis won the "Doritos Crash the Super Bowl " competition. Her development in the competition has been documented in The Orange County Register and The Wall Street Journal . As a prize, she received a contract with Interscope Records , and her videos were played during the Super Bowl XLII commercial breaks .

In 2003, Kina Grannis enrolled at the University of Southern California (USC). In 2005 she was selected by the USC Thornton School of Music to produce a CD. The CD entitled "Sincerely, Me" was released that same year. Grannis graduated with a degree in social sciences with a focus on psychology.

In 2006, Kina Grannis produced and released two albums: One More in the Attic and In Memory of the Singing Bridge. In the spring of 2007 she recorded the song "Ours to Keep", which was written by Rachel Lawrence and Deborah Ellen. It is played regularly at General Hospital . Furthermore, the song was during an episode of the mini-series Samurai Girl of ABC Family uses in September of 2008.

On November 14, 2007, she opened her own YouTube channel, on which her videos had over 40 million visitors within a very short time. Her first video "Message from Your Heart" was also her ticket to the "Crash the Super Bowl" competition, which won her a contract with Interscope Records. Kina Grannis was supposed to release an album with Interscope, but she decided to take a different route and announced in January 2009 that she would release it herself.

In June 2009 her songs "Never Never" and "People" were used in the MTV series College Life.

In April 2011 the artist started her first international tour under the title “World in Front of Me”, which includes not only stops in the United States but also appearances in Europe (including London, Paris and Berlin).

In November 2011 the singer released the music video for her song "In Your Arms", which was produced in stop-motion style, with the artwork based entirely on jelly beans . 288,000 jelly beans were used. In just three days, the video received over a million clicks.

In 2012 she started a charity project called Run Team Kina . The proceeds from the project went to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) founded in 1949.

In 2017 Grannis founded her own label KG Records with the help of her supporters on the Patreon site . Since then she has been producing her music under this fan-financed label.
