Patreon is an American social payment service provider. Through Patreon, artists and creatives can regularly receive a self-determined amount of money from their fans. The platform is enjoying increasing popularity with web video producers , musicians, podcasters and bloggers .

history

Patreon was founded in May 2013 by musician Jack Conte , who was looking for a way to make a living from his popular videos on YouTube . Together with Sam Yam , he developed a platform that enables so-called cartridges (sponsors) to automatically pay the artist a certain amount every time the artist uploads a new video, for example. In a first round, the company raised $ 2.1 million from venture capitalists and business angels in August 2013. In another round, the company raised $ 15 million. As of January 2016, Patreon received $ 47.1 million.

More than 125,000 cartridges were registered in the first 18 months. In late 2014, Patreon announced that it is paying more than $ 1 million to content producers every month.

The website was targeted by cyberattacks in October 2015 . Around 15 gigabytes of password data, donation registrations and source code were stolen and published. In addition, more than 2.3 million email addresses and millions of private messages became public. As a result, some cartridges or donors received blackmail emails asking them to make Bitcoin payments for their private data .

In January 2017, Patreon announced that over $ 100 million has been paid to artists through Patreon since its inception.

Business model

Artists on Patreon are classified according to product type, including video / film, podcast, games, education, etc. These content producers create their own page on the Patreon website, where they provide information about themselves and whether they are from Patrons on a monthly basis Want to receive basic payments or per produced and published content. Artists usually indicate how high their goal of monthly payments is. Patrons can cancel their payments at any time. Similar to other platforms of this type, Patrons receive certain benefits depending on the amount of their payments, for example earlier access to the produced content or exclusive videos with thanks.

Patreon withholds 5 to 12% commission from the payments made by the cartridge to the artists. Another approx. 5% of the payments are omitted due to transaction fees. This leaves the artist himself on average 90% of the income from Patreon. As of April 2018, the average payment size was $ 12 with one million patrons and 50,000 new artists and content producers on the platform each month. The total earnings of all artists in 2017 were $ 150 million.

criticism

Patreon has been criticized for tightening its terms and conditions regarding pornography and comments on YouTube.
