Jason Edward Mewes (born June 12, 1974 in Highlands , New Jersey ) is an American actor .

Life

Mewes achieved greater fame primarily through the portrayal of Jay in the low-budget films of the so-called New Jersey series of his long-time friend and business partner Kevin Smith . In the "New Jersey films" Jason Mewes always mimics a loudmouthed, but insignificant drug dealer .

Mewes had problems with drugs in real life for a long period of time - just like many of the film characters he portrayed - from marijuana to oxycodone to heroin . His drug use repeatedly burdened the shooting of various film projects. Kevin Smith said he was unaware of his friend's heroin addiction while filming the film Dogma , and that he did not find out about it until weeks after filming closed.

Mewes' drug addiction resulted in his being unable to accept the role of Arthur Brickman in Smith's film Jersey Girl after being wanted by the police after violating his probation for drug possession . Instead, he had to undergo drug withdrawal and answer several lawsuits.
