Homology family Murein lipoprotein
Parent taxon Gamma proteobacteria

The murein lipoprotein (also: brown lipoprotein ) occurs in large numbers as a membrane molecule in Gram-negative bacteria . It is firmly bound to the murein layer via covalent bonds and anchored with its hydrophobic head in the outer membrane. In this way, it connects the outer membrane with the murein layer and at the same time serves as a spacer to keep the periplasmic space open. In Gram-positive bacteria it does not occur due to the lack of an outer membrane.
