action

Gertrude, the newly wed wife of the professionally successful PR manager Ollie Trinké, dies giving birth to their daughter Gertie. He is now a single father. In the course of this turning point, he lost his job and his apartment when he made fun of the then (1994) aspiring Will Smith in front of the assembled press landscape . He eventually moves to live with his father in New Jersey. Although he doesn't want to give up his professional success anytime soon and move back to Manhattan as soon as possible, his daughter has other ideas. The yuppie , who was initially career- conscious , initially becomes a rather helpless and later a loving father. Like his father, he works for the city cleaning service in order to be able to find enough time for his now eight-year-old daughter.

While renting a video with his daughter, Ollie meets Maya, a student who works in the video store. In a situation that is embarrassing for him - he also wants to rent a porn film without his daughter noticing - Maya persuades him to answer her questions as part of a sociological study on the behavior of porn renters. They meet a few days later in a diner, where Maya publicly asks him about details of his intimate life; during this conversation he admits that he has not had sexual intercourse since the death of his wife. Maya then offers him a casual one night stand . At first he is reluctant, but then drives with Maya to his father's house, where they hide in the shower from the daughter who unexpectedly comes home and are surprised before the arranged sex can take place. Ollie and Maya agree on a friendly relationship. Later in the film, Ollie tries to get back into the PR business. Thanks to his former protégé Arthur Brickman, he has an interview appointment in New York, which unfortunately is to take place shortly before a joint school performance with his daughter. While waiting, he meets Will Smith, himself a father of three children. You start a conversation, mainly about the joy of children. In doing so, Ollie realizes how important it is to him to attend the school performance. He discards the appointment and, with difficulty, manages to get back to New Jersey in time for the performance. Afterwards, everyone involved happily meets in a pub about the well-run performance. Ollie explains that he wants to stay in New Jersey after all and dances with Maya.

Reviews

  • "Despite the predominant sentimental undertone (the film is typically dedicated to Smith's late father), the director hasn't lost his ear for lifelike, humorous dialogue. Various gags like the ' Sweeney Todd ' Broadway musical interlude hit the bull's eye." (Focus: film)
  • "Normally, Kevin Smith is known for his comedies about drifters, losers and fallen angels. But unlike his previous works, this time he tells a fairly conventional story about a single father. But Kevin Smith wouldn't be Kevin Smith if he was his story would not endow you with dialogue wit and situation comedy. Jersey Girl is never dramatic, but is rather an enchantingly catchy Feel Good comedy. Especially thanks to the smart Raquel Castro as Gertie. " ( Rhein-Zeitung )
