The Serpent and the Rainbow ( The Serpent and the Rainbow ) is an American horror film by Wes Craven from the year 1988 .
action
The scientist Dennis Alan is on behalf of a pharmaceutical company in Haiti on the trail of a powder that is produced locally. This is supposed to turn people into zombies , into the willless undead.
He gets to know the psychiatrist Marielle Duchamp, who accompanies him on research into the world of dark forces. The black magician Dargent Peytraud, who leads the Tonton Macoute and possesses extraordinary witchcraft, feels threatened by the investigation. First he tortures Alan and has him deported. But when he returns out of fear for Marielle, the final argument ensues.
The magician administers the drug to the scientist and has him buried; since he is now undead, it would mean an eternal prison underground. Peytraud, on the other hand, continues to strengthen his magical power by absorbing the souls of the people he zombified. Alan, however, is freed by another undead - a political opponent of Peytraud - and tries to stop Peytraud and free Marielle from his power in the midst of the unrest that caused the flight of the ruling dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier .
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on February 5, 1988 that the film made even the most terrible imaginations believable. Its visual aspects are " stunning " ( " stunning "). In contrast to many other films that deal with voodoo, the film authors seem to have background knowledge of voodoo (“ this movie seems to know something about voodoo ”); Voodoo would be seriously portrayed as a religion and a lifestyle in the film.
For the lexicon of international films , it is a "[b] rutal horror spectacle with unconvincing attempts at interpretation, ostensibly embedded in real political events."
Awards
The make-up was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1990.
background
The script was inspired by a book by Wade Davis, a scientist at Harvard University , the Voodoo examined.
The film was shot in Boston , Haiti and Santo Domingo . Its production amounted to an estimated 7 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 19.6 million in US cinemas. The film is based on Clairvius Narcisse , the first real zombie.
