The sisters of Phaeton by Santi di Tito, transformed into poplars . Fresco in the Palazzo Vecchio , 2nd half of the 16th century.

The Heliads ( ancient Greek Ἡλιάδες Heliádes , German 'sun daughters' ) are the daughters of Helios in Greek mythology : Phaetusa , Lampetia , Aigle , sisters of Phaeton , to whom they harnessed the sun chariot without Helios' permission, with which he then crashed, became out Punishment for it or out of pity, because they wept inconsolably for the death of their brother, turned into poplars (or alders or sweetgum trees ). Amber emerged from their tears , because even as trees they exuded golden tears.
