Heinrich Thun

Heinrich Thun (born September 1, 1938 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian athlete .

Thun was Austrian hammer throw champion from 1957 to 1964 and 1966 . He set fifteen national records and improved the Austrian record from 51.33 m to 69.77 m. The 69.77 m, set up on September 15, 1963 in Leoben , were the best in the world for the year and only broke the Austrian national record in 1976 by Peter Sternad.

At the Olympic Games in 1960 he finished ninth with 63.53 m, he also survived qualification in 1964 , but was eliminated in the preliminary fight as 15th with 62.76 m. At the European Championships in 1958 , Thun finished 13th with 58.17 m. Four years later at the European Championships in Belgrade in 1962 , he achieved his best international result with 65.23 m and fourth place.

In 1961 and 1963 Heinrich Thun was named Sportsman of the Year .

Thun was a sports instructor in the armed forces until 1971 and then moved to the Ministry of Education.
