In short: the concept of a series of television productions / programs.

In media studies, television format is understood to mean “the specific commercial design and license-based definition” of television productions. Colloquially, the term “format” is equated with genre or genre .

While the genre, such as crime fiction, is open to change, the format focuses on strict adherence to the contractually agreed concept. A well-known example of a television format is the game show Wheel of Fortune, taken over from the USA . The Guess Show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is marketed worldwide as a television format and its processes and details are largely defined so that - similar to marketing chains - it is recognizable everywhere. This was an excellent study in the box office hit Slumdog Millionaire .

Since the beginning of the 1980s, format television series such as Dallas and The Denver Clan, with their ratings success, served as models for corresponding German television productions. A narrative dramaturgy was characteristic , according to which "something happens all the time without anything ever changing".

Despite their success, the criticism of such concepts continued and had an impact on broadcasters like Arte .
