Nikolai van Gilse van der Pals
Nikolai Ferdinand van Gilse van der Pals (* May 20, 1891 in Saint Petersburg ; † April 22, 1969 Porvoo ), also Nikolaj, Nikolaus, Nicolas, was a Petersburg musicologist and conductor . He wrote the biographies of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov .
Origin and siblings
His father Hendrik van Gilse van der Pals was a Dutch consul and rubber manufacturer in Saint Petersburg , whose ancestors came from the Dutch noble families of Van Gilse and van der Pals in Rotterdam . His older brother Leopold van der Pals (1884–1966) was a composer in Berlin and Switzerland and composed primarily for Rudolf Steiner . The second brother Max van Gilse van der Pals (1885–1966) became a farmer and baron in Finland , married Sara Stjernvall, daughter of the Russian railway minister Knut Stjernvall ( Nikolai-Bahn ), and moved to the Laakspohja estate.
Childhood and career
Nikolai van der Pals grew up in the upper class environment of his parents' house and had the opportunity to participate in the music scene in Petersburg at an early age. He met u. a. Gustav Mahler and Alexander Glasunow . Concert evenings were held in his parents' house with performances by the composer Anton Arenski and the pianist and conductor Willem Mengelberg .
