The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality , in the region East Rand in the province of Gauteng in South Africa is. The name Ekurhuleni means "place of peace" in Xitsonga . Ekurhuleni is headquartered in Germiston . In 2016, 3,379,104 people lived in 1,299,490 households in the metropolitan municipality.

In 2011 the metropolitan municipality had 3,178,470 inhabitants. Of these, 78.7% were black, 15.8% white, 2.7% colored and 2.1% Indian or Asian.

First language was 28.6% isiZulu to 11.9% English, 11.8% Afrikaans to 11.3% Sepedi to 9.9% Sesotho to 8% isiXhosa to 6.6% Xitsonga to 2.8% Setswana , 2.4% isiNdebele , 1.5% Tshivenda and 1.4% Siswati .


The national roads N3 , N12 and N17 cross their area. South of Kempton Park is OR Tambo International Airport , the largest airport in South Africa.
