Katlehong ( Sesotho ; German about "place of prosperity") is an administrative part of the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni in the South African province of Gauteng .

geography

In 2011 Katlehong had 407,294 residents. The district is south of Germiston . The township Vosloorus is immediately northeast, Thokoza west of Katlehong. In 2011, 37% of residents said isiZulu and 22% Sesotho as their first language. The Natalspruit stream flows through Katlehong in a north-south direction.

history

Katlehong was established as a township for black South Africans in 1945. From May 1993 to January 1994 there were 1,800 deaths here, in Thokoza and Vosloorus, in civil war-like unrest between supporters of the African National Congress and the Inkatha Freedom Party . Among them was the photographer Abdul Shariff, who was shot dead in an attack that apparently targeted Cyril Ramaphosa and Joe Slovo . Katlehong has been part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality since 2000. In 2014 the Natalspruit Hospital in Katlehong was closed and reopened in Vosloorus.

The National Route 3 leads directly on the northeast edge of Katlehong along. The R550 runs south of Katlehong. The Metrorail Gauteng operated in the transport of Germiston Coming stations Katlehong, Lindela, pilot and Kwesine, all located in the area of Katlehong. On the Germiston - Vereeniging route to the west, it serves the Natalspruit and Alrode stops, which are on the northwestern edge of Katlehong. Zonkizwe, located in the south of Katlehong, has a station on a different railway line, which is not served by passenger traffic.
