Carl Sillem

Carl Sillem (born October 14, 1802 in Hamburg ; † February 17, 1876 ​​there ) was a German businessman.

Carl Sillem was born as the son of the merchant Hieronymus Sillem (1768–1833) and Wilhelmine Büsch (1772–1852) in Hamburg. The father ran a commercial business together with Christian Daniel Benecke under the name Sillem, Benecke & Co. On January 1, 1827, Sillem joined the father's company. At the beginning of 1828 he and his brother Wilhelm founded the company Sillem & Co., which became insolvent on April 3, 1832 due to speculation. Together with his brother Adolph, Sillem established the C. & A. Sillem company on January 1, 1839, which existed until the end of November 1842. From 1840 he again belonged to the company Sillem, Benecke & Co., which Heinrich Johann Merck and Ernst Merck also joined in the same year . After C. D. Benecke left the company in 1850, HJ Merck died in 1855 and E. Merck died in 1865, Sillem was the sole owner. Sillem, Benecke & Co. was deleted in 1870 and the company Sillem, Godeffroy & Co. was founded in the same year, to which Sillem belonged until his death.

Sillem was first adjunct from 1830 and from 1833 to 1850 Hundred Eighties of St. Petrikirche . For the parish of St. Michaelis he was a member of the Hamburg citizenship from 1859 to 1862 .

Carl Sillem married Emma Marie Luise Töpffer (1802–1882) on November 1, 1826, and they had eight children.
