Boksburg is a city in the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni , Gauteng Province in South Africa . It is located 20 kilometers east of Johannesburg at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level. In 2011, Boksburg had 260,321 inhabitants and has been the center of extensive coal and gold mining in this area since the end of the 19th century .

Geographical location

Boksburg is located near the eastern Witwatersrand . To the west of Boksburg are the cities of Germiston and, further west, Johannesburg. East of Boksburg are the cities of Benoni , Brakpan and Springs with increasing distance .

history

Boksburg was founded in 1887 to manage mining in the surrounding mines. The city is named after W. Eduard Bok, the State Secretary of the South African Republic from 1881 to 1889. It received city rights in 1903.

Several automobile manufacturers had or have their headquarters in the city. The former Kit Car Center was located here. In addition, the former VW supplier Volkspares , which is now independent, has its headquarters here.

economy

In Boksburg there is an industrial site for products for domestic and foreign ammunition requirements , which has belonged to the state armaments company Denel since 1996 and was taken over in 2008 by the Rheinmetall Group division Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) based in South Africa .
