City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality (short: City of Johannesburg ) is a Metropolitan Municipality in the South African province of Gauteng . It was formed from formerly independent cities and communities. In 2016 the City of Johannesburg had over 4,949,347 inhabitants in 1,853,371 households.

Dimension and meaning

City of Johannesburg is the economically most important metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa and is one of the 40 largest metropolises in the world. In terms of its geographical location, City of Johannesburg embodies the world's largest contiguous urban region that is not located on a lake, river or coast.

Administrative locations

The central administrative headquarters of the metropolitan municipality City of Johannesburg is located on Braamfontein Hill in the inner-city district of Johannesburg of the same name. Rail transport

The main train station is located in the center of Johannesburg and is operated by PRASA . The Gautrain local transport system serves several stations in the area of ​​the metropolitan municipality and extends to neighboring Tshwane and Ekurhuleni .

Road traffic

In addition to a very dense regional road network, the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality has several supraregional and efficient road connections, some of which cross it. Airports

The OR Tambo International Airport in the City of Ekurhuleni is to the east, close to the border with the City of Johannesburg and has good transport links. The transport connection is provided by the R512, which crosses the N14 national road south of the airport.
