The Johannesburg Art Gallery is an art museum located in Johannesburg , South Africa . It is located on the southern edge of Joubert Park in the city center, the urban region F.

history

The museum's original collection, owned by Sir Hugh Lane , was shown in London in 1910 before being shipped to South Africa. The wife of the mine owner Lionel Phillips , Lady Florence Phillips , contributed to an expansion of the collection with her husband's funds and donated her own collection of lace . She was also able to persuade her husband to donate seven oil paintings and a sculpture by Auguste Rodin to the gallery.

Lady Phillips was able to commit the city of Johannesburg to provide the costs for the construction of the gallery. The plans for the building were drawn up by Sir Edwin Lutyens ; part of the construction costs were borne by the Jewish financier Otto Beit , who came from Hamburg . The new building was inaugurated in 1915 because of the First World War without ceremonies.

building

The gallery building was not built exactly according to Lutyen's plans. The main entrance faces south, i.e. facing away from the sun. An eastern and a western wing were added to the main building in the 1940s. The north facade and the exhibition rooms there were built in 1986 and 1987, so that a total of 15 exhibition rooms are available today. Outside there is a sculpture garden that has been the victim of damage and theft several times over the past two decades.
