Sandton is a city in the north of the metropolitan municipality City of Johannesburg in the South African province of Gauteng . In 2011, Sandton had 222,415 residents. The name was derived from a combination of the names of the two parts Sandown and Bryanston , which in turn are named after places in the United Kingdom .
history
The city was founded in 1969 when Johannesburg was expanding northward. After the end of apartheid and the establishment of the new democratic government in 1994, Sandton was incorporated into the metropolitan municipality of Johannesburg. In addition to Sandown and Bryanston, the Rivonia district belongs to Sandton .
economy
Sandton became the country's new financial center and Johannesburg's main business center. The Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) has been located in Sandton since the late 1990s. The Industrial Development Corporation , Eskom , African Rainbow Minerals , Shanduka Group , Palabora Mining Corporation and CNBC Africa are also based at this location.
Attractions
One of the city's greatest attractions is Sandton City , the largest shopping mall in South Africa. Together with Nelson Mandela Square , the central square, the complex covers an area of around 144,000 square meters. There is a Gautrain stop in Sandton .
Sandton is the wealthiest neighborhood in the City of Johannesburg , not far from Alexandra , arguably the poorest township in the country.
In 2019, the tallest skyscraper in Africa, The Leonardo , opened at 228 meters .
