Rivonia is a district in Sandton of the metropolitan municipality City of Johannesburg in South Africa .
geography
Rivonia is located about 15 kilometers north of the center of Johannesburg. It belongs to Sandton , which makes up Region 3 of Johannesburg. It is one of the most affluent areas of the city both as a business center and as a housing estate. Rivonia includes the former townships Edenburg, Edenburg Extension and 19 other extensions with the names Rivonia 1 to Rivonia 25 . In 2011 Rivonia had 1295 inhabitants.
history
In the Rivonia area is the Liliesleaf Farm (German: Lilienblatt-Farm), which served as the headquarters of the then banned African National Congress (ANC) and its armed arm Umkhonto we Sizwe for almost two years in the early 1960s . Since the area was then reserved for the whites, the "white" lawyers Arthur Goldreich and Harold Wolpe appeared as owners, the black ANC members partly as their servants. On July 11, 1963, seven leading resistance fighters were arrested there. The subsequent trial, which took place in Pretoria , came to be known as the Rivonia Trial . The main defendant, Nelson Mandela , had not been arrested in Rivonia, but had previously been arrested elsewhere.
Rivonia became part of Sandton in 1969 together with the boroughs of Bryanston , Sandown and Morningside, whose name is a trunk word from Sandown and Bryanston .
As part of the urbanization of the area and the construction of expressways, parts of the original village of Rivonia were demolished. The Liliesleaf Farm, now in an urban setting, was renovated after the end of apartheid and a museum was added and has been open to the public since 2008.
economy
Numerous IT companies have settled in Rivonia , including the Hewlett-Packard subsidiary for Southern Africa . Rivonia Boulevard is a busy commercial street with shopping malls.
