Oscar Pistorius in 2007

Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius (* 22. November 1986 in Sandton ), also known as Fastest man on no legs and Blade Runner , is a South African sprinter and world record holder, the at birth due to a malformation ( Fibulaaplasie ), the fibula and the outer side of the Feet were missing. He only had two toes, the bones on the inside of the foot and the heel. At the age of eleven months, his legs were amputated below the knees . With lower leg prostheses made especially for him from carbon fiber reinforced plastic , he is able to run and sprint.

In February 2013, he shot his partner Reeva Steenkamp in the shared apartment . Because of this homicide he was charged and ultimately sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for murder under South African law ( murder ).

Life

Oscar Pistorius is the second child of Sheila (1958–2002) and Henk Pistorius. He has two siblings: brother Carl Pistorius, who is 18 months older, and sister Aimee, who is three years younger. The parents divorced when Oscar was seven years old. His mother tongue is Afrikaans and he speaks English .

Pistorius attended Constantia Kloof Primary School and from 2001 to 2005 the Pretoria Boys High School. From 2007 the athlete studied business administration .

Athletic career

At high school, Pistorius initially played cricket , rugby and tennis . Running was only part of rugby training at the time. On June 21, 2003, however, he was seriously injured playing rugby. A longer rehab phase followed. In this, Pistorius concentrated on running for the first time.

On January 28, 2004, the then 17-year-old won his first 100-meter race . In a school competition he ran 100 meters in 11.72 seconds.

In September 2004 Pistorius competed at the Paralympics in Athens and won gold over 200 meters and bronze over 100 meters (both in the T44 category ).

In March 2005 Pistorius ran at the open championships (the non-disabled) in South Africa and was sixth over 400 meters with 47.34 seconds . In the same year he won gold twice at the “Visa Paralympic World Cup” over 100 and 200 meters. In May 2005 he was invited to Manchester and took part in the Paralympic World Cup. In August the athlete traveled to Helsinki for the Grand Prix.

In 2006 Pistorius won three gold medals at the IPC World Championships in Assen, the Netherlands . He won over 100, 200 and 400 meters. In April 2007 he ran his personal best over 100 meters in 10.91 seconds at the “Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled” in Johannesburg . In Rome at an event of the World Athletics Federation IAAF he came second on July 13, 2007 - also against able-bodied athletes.

Pistorius said he wants at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing to compete against able-bodied athletes.

Critics like Elio Locatelli of the World Athletics Federation believed his prostheses were giving him an unfair advantage. The IAAF decided on the basis of an expert report prepared by Biomechanics Professor Gert-Peter Brüggemann from the Sport University Cologne that Pistorius was not allowed to take part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The International Sports Court ( CAS) overturned the decision on May 16, 2008 because, in addition to the undisputed advantages of Pistorius' prostheses, which are presented in the study, it also recognized disadvantages in other aspects of the run (environmental influences, cornering behavior, starting mechanics) that were insufficient had been taken into account. At the same time, the CAS emphasized that the decision in favor of Pistorius was an express individual decision, from which no automatic claim for comparable future cases could be derived. So Pistorius had overcome the bureaucratic hurdles, but he missed the norm for both the 400-meter route and the relay.

In September 2008, at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, he won the 100, 200 and 400-meter runs of the T44 class in 11.17 seconds, 21.67 seconds and 47.49 seconds.

In January 2009 Pistorius announced that he wanted to compete at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin over the 400 meter distance. However, he failed to meet the qualifying norm of 45.95 seconds.

On July 19, 2011, Pistorius undercut the qualification norm for the 2011 World Championships in Daegu with a time of 45.07 seconds over 400 meters . Together with Jason Smyth , Pistorius is the first disabled athlete to qualify for World Athletics Championships . With a time of 45.39 seconds, Pistorius was third in his heat and qualified for the semi-finals, where he was eliminated with a time of 46.19 seconds as the last of his run. His lead time would have been enough for a final qualification. In the semifinals, he ran a new South African national record in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 2: 59.21 minutes. The South African relay reached second place in the final without Pistorius. Because of his participation in the semi-finals, Pistorius was also awarded the silver medal.

In early July 2012, the South African Olympic Committee nominated Pistorius for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London for the 4-by-400-meter relay . Pistorius started as the first bilateral leg amputee at the Summer Olympics . With his teammates Shaun de Jager , Willem de Beer and LJ van Zyl he reached eighth place.

Criminal case

Pistorius was in a relationship with the South African model Reeva Steenkamp from autumn 2012 . After she was found dead in Pistorius' home in Pretoria with multiple gunshot wounds on February 14, 2013 , the South African police arrested him . Pistorius was charged with murder . On February 22, 2013, he was provisionally released on bail of one million rand (about 85,000 euros ). In order to enable further investigations, the court adjourned the hearing on June 4, 2013 to August 19, 2013. In the hearing that then took place, it was decided to continue the hearing from March 3, 2014. Pistorius repeatedly protested his innocence in the sense of the murder charge and claimed to have accidentally shot his girlfriend because he had taken her for a burglar.

When the verdict was pronounced on September 11 and 12, 2014, Pistorius was acquitted by the judge Thokozile Masipa of the accusation of intentional homicide and that of negligent homicide . Pistorius was also found guilty of negligent behavior in handling a firearm for firing a gun in a restaurant a few weeks before Steenkamp's death . Pistorius stated that he had not considered the possibility of "killing the person behind the door". Masipa accused Pistorius of " inconsistency " in his statements, but also questioned some incriminating testimony and invalidated several arguments of the public prosecutor under Gerrie Nel , which should prove a dispute between the couple. With a sentence of up to 15 years imprisonment , the public prosecutor's office demanded ten years imprisonment for Pistorius in the closing speech, while the defense pleaded for house arrest and community service. On October 21, 2014, Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison and was suspended for three more years for illegally using weapons. The public prosecutor applied for an appeal .

On March 13, 2015, the appeal was allowed and defense objections were dismissed. In October 2015, Pistorius was allowed to leave prison after a year, but was placed under house arrest. On December 3, 2015, the appellate court overturned the judgment and found Pistorius guilty of murder with reduced intent to kill, which roughly corresponds to the German legal term manslaughter . A sentence was initially not announced. On March 3, 2016, the Constitutional Court rejected Pistorius' application for appeal due to a lack of prospect of success. On July 6, 2016, Judge Thokozile Masipa reduced the planned sentence of 15 years to six years imprisonment due to mitigating circumstances, but Pistorius did not want to appeal.

On September 16, 2016, the National Prosecuting Authority filed an application to the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa to extend Pistorius' prison sentence . Thereupon Pistorius' family members accused the public prosecutor Gerrie Nel as a motive of his actions "personal revenge". In November 2016, Pistorius was transferred from Kgosi Mampuru II prison to the Atteridgeville Correctional Center , which has been optimized for disabled inmates .

In November 2017 the Supreme Court of Appeal increased Pistorius' prison sentence to the regular minimum of 15 years on appeal by the public prosecutor, but added the already served prison sentence and house arrest time, so that the serving of his sentence will end in 2031.
