Reeva Steenkamp

Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp (born August 19, 1983 in Cape Town , † February 14, 2013 in Pretoria ) was a South African model and presenter . Steenkamp was in a relationship with the sprinter Oscar Pistorius , who shot her on Valentine's Day 2013.

Life

Origin and education

Steenkamp grew up in a suburb of Cape Town and moved to Port Elizabeth with her parents as a child . There she attended St Dominic's Priory School . After graduating from high school , she went to the University of Port Elizabeth and began studying law , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 2005 . Then she worked as a legal assistant .

Model career

Steenkamp started modeling at the age of 14. In competitions in 2004 and 2005, she reached the finals. In 2006 she got her first professional engagement as a bikini model for the British men's magazine FHM . In the South African edition of the magazine, she reached 45th place in the readers' choice of the FHM 100 Sexiest Women 2012 .

Steenkamp also modeled for Avon Cosmetics , Toyota , the South African food company Clover and the fashion label Zui, among others . From 2011 she worked as a presenter for the South African Internet broadcaster FashionTV and participated in the fifth season of the South African reality TV series Tropika Island of Treasure .

On November 5, 2012, Steenkamp appeared in public for the first time with the South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius at the South African Sports Awards in Johannesburg .

Death and aftermath

On February 14, 2013, Steenkamp was found shot dead at around 4 a.m. local time in Pistorius' house in Silver Lakes, a suburb of Pretoria . The police arrested Pistorius because of the urgent suspicion. The funeral service for Steenkamp took place on February 19, 2013 in a crematorium in Port Elizabeth . Her ashes were later scattered on the coast by her family.

Oscar Pistorius was convicted of the negligent homicide of Steenkamp in September 2014 . Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced him to five years in prison in the first instance ; however, the prosecution obtained an appeal to obtain a murder conviction. On December 3, 2015, the appeals court overturned the verdict and sentenced Pistorius of murder under South African law . The sentence was set at six years in prison on July 6, 2016. The South African Supreme Court of Appeal increased the sentence to 13 years and five months in November 2017.
