The Nelson Mandela University (NMU), until 2017 , Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), is a state university in the Metropolitan Municipality Nelson Mandela Bay in the South African province of Eastern Cape . The campus areas are in Port Elizabeth . The university is named after Nelson Mandela .

The then NMMU was founded in 2005, making it one of the youngest universities in South Africa. As part of the nationwide reorganization in the higher education landscape, the university emerged from the amalgamation of the Port Elizabeth Technikon ( PE Technikon ), founded in 1882, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), founded in 1964, and the local campus of Vista University , founded in 1982. Am July 20, 2017, the name was shortened to Nelson Mandela University .

The NMU is headed by a Vice Chancellor. The management also includes three deputy vice chancellors, a CFO and a CHRO . The chancellor has representative and symbolic tasks.
