Clover Industries Limited is a South African food company that has been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange since December 14, 2010 . Clover manufactures a variety of dairy products and consumer goods that reach customers and consumers in South Africa, Swaziland , Namibia , Botswana and West Africa through a large distribution network for refrigerated products .

Some farmers from the Natal Midlands founded a cooperative for the production of butter in Mooi River in 1898 under the name Natal Creamery Ltd. Milk processing was started by Joseph Baynes on the Nel's Rust farm the following year. Because there was no legal regulation for cooperatives at that time, Natal Creamery was registered as a company with H. Blaker as its first chairman.

A partnership between Natal Creamery and Joseph Baynes Ltd for the marketing of milk in Durban was dissolved in October 1901. Natal Creamery began distributing milk in Pietermaritzburg in 1902 , and daily milk deliveries to Johannesburg were added as early as 1903, where Milk Supply Company Ltd was taken over in 1908 . In 1922 the legal basis was created that one year later the Natal Creamery could be registered as a cooperative. In 1932 Natal Creamery was already operating in 32 locations across the country. Were admitted to the 1934 companies that are entirely in co-operative ownership, Natal Creamery changed its name to National Co-operative Dairies Ltd .

Clover SA (Pty) Ltd was founded on December 10, 1993 and planned a joint venture with Danone from 1995 . The holding company Clover Holdings Ltd was established in 1997 for Clover SA (Pty) Ltd. The following year, Danone and Clover SA (Pty) Ltd. formed the joint venture Danone Clover (Pty) Ltd .

In November 2003, National Co-operative Dairies Ltd was converted into a public company. Here, the name was to Clover Industries Ltd changed. The majority were common shares owned by the milk producers, the preferred shares became freely tradable. Clover SA (Pty) Ltd and Danone formed the joint venture Clover Danone Beverages Ltd .

2004 triggered Clover Industries Ltd , the Clover Holdings Ltd as the owner of Clover SA (Pty) Ltd from. The company became one of the largest branded goods companies in the consumer goods sector. The largest milk processor in South Africa also became the leading food manufacturer and marketer in the region. In 2005, 25.1% of the shares of Hosken Consolidated Investments Ltd , which serves as a BBBEE partner, were acquired.

In 2006, Clover SA (Pty) Ltd formed the joint venture Clover Fonterra Ingredients (Pty) Ltd with Fonterra from New Zealand . In 2007, Hosken Consolidated Investments Ltd exercised the option to increase its equity stake to 34.9%. Clover SA (Pty) Ltd bought 39.8% of the shares in Clover Danone Beverages Ltd from Danone. The company name was in Clover Beverages Ltd changed.

In 2008 Danone Clover (Pty) Ltd bought a 70 percent stake in Mayo Dairy (Pty) Ltd. The following year Danone Clover (Pty) Ltd had to be deconsolidated and refinanced. In 2010 Danone Clover was sold and a capital restructuring was carried out. In the same year, the rule that only milk producers can hold ordinary shares was lifted. The ordinary shares were therefore no longer linked to milk deliveries. Danone Clover also bought back 34.9% of the common stock of Hosken Consolidated Investments Ltd and converted preferred stock into promissory notes. The company went public on December 14, 2010.

In 2011, Clover acquired a minority stake in Clover Beverages Limited, with subsequent acquisition of the non-alcoholic beverages business by Clover SA. In 2012, Clover purchased Real Juice Co. Holdings (Pty) Ltd from AVI Limited and acquired minority stakes in Clover Botswana (Pty) Ltd and Clover Manhattan (Pty) Ltd.

In 2013, the Clover Waters Joint Venture was founded, in which Clover has 70% and Nestlé 30% shares. The joint venture enables Clover to expand its range of branded beverages. This gave Clover access to the global brands Nestlé Pure Life and Nestea , which are not yet present in the sub-Saharan African market.

In 2014, Futurelife was founded together with Clover, a joint venture in which Clover and the functional food marketer Futurelife each have a 50% share.

Clover is a leading consumer goods company in South Africa and neighboring countries. The core competence lies in the following areas:

  • Trade and sale of fast moving consumer goods

The business platform established with the dairy business reaches a large proportion of South African customers and consumers with around 17,000 delivery points. It encompasses the entire value chain from manufacture to sale and also includes logistics , supply chain management and marketing.
