Jason Smyth

Jason Lloyd Smyth (born July 4, 1987 in Derry , Northern Ireland ) is a visually impaired Irish athlete .

Life

Smyth began his sporting career as a sprinter in 2003. At the World Championships in Assen in 2006, Smyth managed to win gold and set a world record in 100 m and 200 m.

Smyth took in 2008 in Beijing for the first time in Paralympic Games in part. There he won the second gold medal for Ireland in the men's T13 ranking on 100 m. He broke the world record of 10.85 s he had set himself, first in the qualification with a score of 10.81 s and then in the final with a score of 10.62 s. He was also able to win a gold medal in the men's T13 ranking of 200 m, the third for Ireland, and improve his 2006 world record with a time of 21.43 s.

At the European Athletics Championships 2010 in Barcelona , Smyth competed in the men's 100 m competition. This makes him the first disabled athlete to take part in the European Athletics Championships. With a time of 10.43 s he reached the semifinals, where he was eliminated in fourth place with 10.46 s.

After Smyth achieved a remarkable 10.22 s over the 100 m in 2011, he could not quite build on this performance at the 2011 World Athletics Championships in Daegu with 10.57 s and was eliminated in fifth place in the preliminary run. Together with Oscar Pistorius , he is the first disabled athlete to take part in World Athletics Championships.

At the Summer Paralympics 2012 in London he set a new official world record with 10.54 seconds in the run-up to the 100 m run in the T13 classification. In the final that followed, he was able to improve this value to 10.46 s, thus defending his 2008 victory. He did the same on the 200 m course, where he also set a new world record in the final with 21.05 s.

In 2012 Symth was again among the participants at the European Championships over 100 meters . As in 2010, he reached the semi-finals, where he was eliminated this time with 10.52 s as a barrel sieve after he had achieved a time of 10.47 s in the run-up.
