Gerrie Nel

Gerhard C. "Gerrie" Nel (* 1961 ) is a former South African public prosecutor . He gained international fame as a prosecutor in the trial of Oscar Pistorius . In South African judicial circles, he is nicknamed "The Bulldog".

Life

Nel studied in Pretoria Law and worked from 1984 as a prosecutor. He led the indictment in the trial of the former South African police chief Jackie Selebi , whom he brutally cross- examined for nine days and thus contributed decisively to Selebi being sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption. Nel was the senior prosecutor at the Supreme Court of South Africa in the trial of Oscar Pistorius from 2014 .

During the Selebi trial in 2008, Nel was arrested by 20 officers during a night raid . A trumped-up charge of fraud against him was promptly dropped and Selebi was later sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption .

Following the Selebi trial, Nel received an award from the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), a non-governmental, non-partisan organization whose goal is the fight against cross-border crime.

In the trial of Oscar Pistorius , he often upset the accused, for example when he had a video shown of the athlete laughing and shooting at a watermelon. He referred to the analogy to Pistorius' shots on his partner Reeva Steenkamp , so that Pistorius burst into tears. His tough tactics ultimately did not help Nel obtain a conviction for murder .

In 2017, Nel retired as a public prosecutor. Since then he has headed the private prosecution unit of the AfriForum , founded in 2006 , an advocacy group for Afrikaans .
