AfriForum is a South African organization whose aim is to represent the interests of Afrikaans .

history

The organization was founded in 2006 by Kallie Kriel, a former member of the Konserwatiewe Party and chairman of the youth organization Vryheidsfront Plus (VF +). Many other high-ranking representatives of the AfriForum also belong to the VF +. AfriForum belongs to the umbrella organization Solidariteit (German: "Solidarity"), which emerged in 2002 from the Mynwerkersunie (German: "Miners' Union"), which was only approved for white people .

Kriel and his deputy Ernst Roets traveled to the USA and Australia to lobby for their cause. After an appearance of Roets in the US Fox News -Talkshow Tucker Carlson Tonight took US President Donald Trump , the thesis of the " genocide of whites" (white genocide) and dismissed Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo on, worrying about. Kriel and Roets also met US Security Advisor John R. Bolton there . In Australia, where the Home Secretary had already ordered eased immigration procedures for Afrikaans, they were received by MPs.

structure

According to its own information, the organization has around 220,000 members (as of 2019) who pay membership fees of around 85 Rand per month. Thus, AfriForum has the equivalent of around one million euros available per month. Among other things, the organization maintains a film production company and its own - private - prosecution, which has been headed by former prosecutor Gerrie Nel since 2017 . She investigated, among others, against Julius Malema , Grace Mugabe , Thandi Modise and Duduzane Zuma , the son of the then President Jacob Zuma . The organization also appears as the prosecutor in one rape case after the victim's mother contacted AfriForum. AfriForum also runs a security company that aims to help members bypass government structures in emergencies.

The sub-organization AfriForum Jeug is open to schoolchildren and students.

Positions and Campaigns

AfriForum became known through protests against the renaming of the capital Pretoria and numerous streets in South Africa. She spoke out against the prescribed preference for non-whites in companies according to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment . In the sports sector, together with Solidariteit, she takes legal action against quotas for population groups, as she sees the Afrikaans as disadvantaged.

AfriForum denies the statement that apartheid was a crime against humanity . She fears a "genocide" against the white South Africans in the future. She advises farmers on possible expropriation .

The organization sued the ruling African National Congress and the then police minister in connection with the “farm murders” ( Afrikaans : plaasmoorde ) of white farmers . It publishes numbers of such murder cases that exceed the numbers of official statistics (for example 62 "farm murders" in the reporting year 2017/2018). Ernst Roets called the "farm murders" "ethnic extinction".

reception

AfriForum sees itself as a civil rights organization . The organization is also perceived as a nationalist and defender of white supremacy.

Max du Preez described the attitude of AfriForum as "reactionary identity- politics" ( reactionary identity politics ), which as the next group Economic Freedom Fighters would fuel the "racial rhetoric". The ANC Youth League called AfriForum in 2012, "defenders of white privileges" ( defender of white privilege ). AfriForum is sometimes seen as part of the Alt-Right movement.
