Joseph Wopfner (also Josef Wopfner ; born March 19, 1843 in Schwaz , Tyrol , † July 22, 1927 in Munich ) was an Austrian landscape painter and representative of the Munich School . Since he often used motifs from Chiemgau for his paintings , he is also known as a Chiemsee painter.

Life

Joseph Wopfner first learned the bakery trade from his father. Because of his talent for drawing, he went to Munich in 1860, where he initially worked as a room painter and lithographer . On May 2, 1864, he enrolled in the class of antiquities at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts , where he was temporarily a student of Carl Theodor von Piloty and made friends with Wilhelm Leibl . After completing his studies in 1872, he set up his own studio on Landwehrstrasse . In the same year he discovered the untouched nature of the Chiemgau, which inspired him and whose landscape shaped almost all of his artistic work. That's why he spent the summer months on Fraueninsel . In 1873 he was one of the co-founders of the Munich artist society Allotria , at whose annual exhibition he was represented in the same year with the paintings "Potato Harvest" and "Motif in Chiemsee". In 1884 he moved his studio to Nymphenburger Str. 24 ( now 41 ). In 1885 his home community Schwaz made him an honorary citizen , in 1886 the community of Frauenchiemsee. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Michael in 1887 . The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, of which he had been an honorary member since 1896, appointed him titular professor on November 3, 1888 . At the Glaspalast exhibition in 1890, he was awarded a gold medal. Since he had portrayed the Prince Regent Luitpold several times , he received the Prince Regent Luitpold Medal in 1906 . In 1914 he was granted Bavarian citizenship.

Based on Wopfner's sketchbooks it can be proven that he had contacts with the painter colonies in Brannenburg , Polling , Bernried am Starnberger See , Ebenhausen , Dachau and Pähl . He donated five paintings to the Bozener Batzenhäusl , which was a popular meeting place for artists.

Joseph Wopfner married Mathilde Killian (1849–1926) in the Munich St. Boniface Church in 1878 , which he survived by a year.
