Alexander Rauch was initially involved in the co-founding of the series Monument Topography of the Federal Republic of Germany under Conservator General Michael Petzet from 1977 and worked as editor and author of the first volumes Stadt Schwabach and Stadt Eichstätt . As a result of this research in the field of architecture and building research , he also worked as a consultant for the Eichstätt agricultural office. He also dedicated himself specifically to the restoration of the Eichstätter Residenzplatz in terms of monument preservation, with several publications.

Until 1989 he worked as an author for the Dehio-Handbuch der deutschen Kunstdenkmäler (Deutscher Kunstverlag) in seven districts of the volumes of Upper and Lower Bavaria. In the field of painting , he wrote articles on Herder's Grosses Kunstlexikon or Bruckmann's Lexikon der Münchner Kunst, Munich painters in the 19th and 20th centuries , Das Große Lexikon der Graphik (Westermann Verlag), but also monographs on Munich artists such as Franz von Stuck or Joseph Wopfner .

In the field of international art, works on the painting of the Italian Renaissance , the European Renaissance and the painting of Classicism and Romanticism emerged . Furthermore, he was the main initiator of the preparation and led the international symposium “A Jewish Museum for Munich”. Lectures and publications followed, such as the Sign Language of Jewish Architecture in Munich , the 1995 exhibition “Memorials of the Holocaust” and the preparatory work for a lexicon of Jewish artists. In addition to specialist publications, Rauch also devoted himself to popular science articles, for example in the art magazine PAN (Burda-Verlag). Rauch has published his research results on the subject of Ludwig II of Bavaria in monographs on the castles of Neuschwanstein , Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee . King Ludwig II and his time ”, organized by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and Art - House of Bavarian History - published in the catalog of articles for the exhibition.

The majority of his works were created as a result of research assignments from the State Office for Monument Preservation, Dehio Society, museums and university research programs. This resulted in monographs on urban architecture, artist monographs, art lexical works, mainly from the areas of monument preservation, architecture and painting in southern Germany from the 18th to the 20th century, the Italian Renaissance, European art of the Romantic period and classicism, but also research results from Jewish history. From his research on King Ludwig II of Bavaria, publications in this area arose. During his work at the Munich City Museum or as director of the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, he worked on numerous exhibitions, including those on modernism. As an art appraiser for the TV station SWR in the series Echt antique?! participated.
