Casalvolone Monastery (San Salvatore di Casalvolone) was a Cistercian monastery in Piedmont , Italy . It was in the municipality of Casalvolone near Borgo Vercelli in the province of Novara between Novara and Vercelli .

history

A Benedictine monastery already existed in Casalvolone in 1132, which was reoccupied with Cistercian monks in 1169 by Morimondo Monastery , a daughter of the Morimond Primary Abbey . In a later document the brothers Ardizzone, Enrico and Tommaso von Casalgualone or Casalvolone are named as donors, which can also refer to the Benedictine monastery. For the year 1225 an abbot Ottone de Coronato (ie Morimondo) is documented. According to the records of the general chapter of the order, the monastery was still occupied in 1344 after a monk of the monastery was permanently incarcerated. Since the monastery was no longer mentioned when the Italian Congregation of St. Bernard was founded in 1497, it should no longer have existed at that time (Bedini). The municipality of Casalvolone developed around the monastery .

Plant and buildings

The monastery church was reduced to a small oratory in the first quarter of the 19th century. In the village there is also the church of San Pietro, which served as a parish church during the existence of the monastery and probably dates from pre-Cistercian times.
