LJ van Zyl ( Louis Jacobus van Zyl ; born July 20, 1985 in Bloemfontein ) is a former South African athlete . The hurdler started over the 400-meter course .

Career

The 2002 junior world champion finished sixth at the 2005 World Championships in Helsinki . In 2006 he won gold over the 400 m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with the South African team silver in the 4 x 400 m relay and won the title at the African Athletics Championships in Bambous .

In 2007 he won gold at the Pan-African Games , but was eliminated at the World Championships in Osaka in the preliminary stages. The following year he defended his title at the African Championships in Addis Ababa . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, he came in fifth place and retired with the South African relay in the run-up to the 4-by-400-meter relay.

In 2009 he reached the semi-finals at the World Cup in Berlin . In 2010 he won his third gold in a row at the African Championships in Nairobi , was fifth at the Athletics Continental Cup in Split and won silver at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi .

At the 2011 World Cup in Daegu, he won bronze over the 400 m hurdles and silver with the South African team in the 4 x 400 meter relay.

In 2012 he did not get past the first round at the Olympic Games in London over 400 m hurdles and finished eighth with the South African team in the 4 x 400 meter relay. The following year he failed again in the first round of the World Cup in Moscow .

At the end of April 2018, Van Zyl announced his retirement from competitive sports.

LJ van Zyl is 1.86 m tall with a competition weight of 75 kg. He has been married to the long-distance runner Irvette van Blerk since 2012 .
