Radetzkymarsch is a multi-part TV series from 1994. It is based on the novel Radetzkymarsch by Joseph Roth from 1932.
action
Over three generations of the von Trotta family, the film portrays their rise and fall as well as that of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . The story begins in 1859, when officer Joseph Trotta saves the life of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I in the battle of Solferino , is raised to the nobility and henceforth lives on in school books as "Hero of Solferino". From then on the von Trotta family began their ascent.
Baron Franz von Trotta ( Max von Sydow ), son of the "hero", has gained a reputation as district captain in Moravia and wants his son Carl Joseph ( Tilman Günther ), the protagonist of the film, to follow him and pursue an officer career. Reluctantly, he also does so in order to fulfill his duty to family and fatherland.
The decline of the Danube Monarchy, but also of the von Trotta family, is exemplified by the person of Carl Joseph. Both stories end with the First World War : the German empire falls and the young officer von Trotta falls in an insignificant battle while trying to fetch water for his thirsty soldiers.
particularities
Director Axel Corti died on December 29, 1993 while the film was being made, so that cameraman Gernot Roll finished the film. Corti was posthumously awarded the Adolf Grimme Gold Prize for Radetzkymarsch in 1995 (together with Gernot Roll, Max von Sydow and Tilman Günther ).
“During the filming process, Corti had converted his weekly radio feature pages, better known as Silencer , into a kind of Radetzky March diary. […] In eleven silencers , Corti told about the hardships and joys of filmmaking, about theft and sloppiness on the set, about the eternal waiting and the cold, about holding your breath when Max von Sydow shows all his skills, about ignorance and about the insulting advice of 'experts' forced on him. "
Filming locations: Kačina Castle near Kuttenberg serves as the castle of Count Chojnicki .
Reviews
"An elaborate, sensitive film adaptation (completed by cameraman Roll after Axel Corti's death), which - also due to the length - demands patience and concentration and comes up with some of the highlights of the prominent cast."
