content
Based on authentic documents and testimony from contemporary witnesses, the film describes how the Politburo of the GDR experienced the period from May to the opening of the Wall in November 1989, generally known as the turning point in German history. All important events are touched upon: from the opening of Hungary's border to the west, the falsified local elections on May 7, 1989, the first demonstrations and the wave of GDR citizens who began to flee through Hungary and Czechoslovakia . The inability of the party leadership to respond to the country's problems is impressively described, which culminates in the 40th anniversary celebrations. Even the warning words of the Soviet party leader Gorbachev are not heard in East Berlin . The film also reconstructed Honecker's removal and the international press conference at which Schabowski announced the opening of the borders on November 9th. Ultimately, this was followed by the unstoppable collapse of the SED , to which in the end even the party base gave up its allegiance, and of all of socialism in the GDR.
