Harry Tisch (born March 28, 1927 in Heinrichswalde , Western Pomerania , † June 18, 1995 in Berlin ) was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED and chairman of the Free German Trade Union Confederation in the GDR .

Life

Tisch completed an apprenticeship as a building fitter in Pasewalk from 1941 to 1944 and was a soldier in the German Wehrmacht from 1944 to 1945. He was a British prisoner of war in Neumünster . He managed to escape on November 28, 1945.

He worked as a locksmith in Ueckermünde and joined the SED, the FDJ and the FDGB. After attending the district party school, he was district youth secretary from 1948 to 1949 and first secretary of the FDGB district board Ueckermünde until 1950, after attending the trade union school in Bernau near Berlin from 1950 to 1952 regional chairman of IG Metall in Mecklenburg and until 1953 deputy district chairman of the FDGB in Rostock and after the state elections in the GDR 1950 until the dissolution of the states in 1952 member of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

From 1953 to 1955, Tisch attended the SED party college and was then secretary for economics to the SED district leadership in Rostock until 1959, chairman of the Rostock district council until 1961 and first secretary of the SED district leadership until 1975, and from 1952 to 1954 and 1958 to 1975 Member of the District Assembly.

In 1963 he became a member of the Central Committee of the SED , a candidate in 1971 and a member of the Politburo in 1975 . Since 1963 he was also a member of the People's Chamber and since 1975 a member of the State Council and the Presidium of the National Council of the National Front . From 1975 to 1989 he was the successor to Herbert Warnke, chairman of the FDGB.

In November 1989, Tisch resigned with the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED, was removed from his position as a member of the State Council and also expelled from the FDGB. In December, he was expelled from the SED before his arrest.

In a lawsuit for abuse of trust and infidelity - for years he had a. made it possible for the Politburo member Günter Mittag and his entire family to take free luxury vacations at FDGB costs - in 1991, Tisch was sentenced to 18 months in prison and released after taking into account pre-trial detention and suspension of detention.

An indictment of the fatal shots at the Berlin Wall and the inner-German border in January 1995 did not lead to trial because of the death of Tisch due to heart failure.

Alongside Günter Schabowski , Tisch was one of the few former high-ranking SED functionaries who expressed their regret over the injustice that had taken place in the GDR. In a conversation with the Berliner Zeitung in 1993, Tisch said: "We preached water and drank wine ourselves, today I am very sorry for everything".

Tisch received the GDR Patriotic Order of Merit in gold in 1969 and was also awarded the Karl Marx Order in 1977 .
