Otto Schenk
Otto Schenk (born June 12, 1930 in Vienna ) is an Austrian actor , cabaret artist , director and artistic director .
Life
Otto Schenk was born to Catholic parents. His grandfather was the Viennese embryologist Samuel Leopold Schenk . Since his grandparents were baptized Jews on his father's side, his father was discriminated against under the Nuremberg Laws after the " Anschluss of Austria " in 1938 . Therefore he lost his previous job as a lawyer. He was spared further persecution because he was married to an “ Aryan ” and thus lived in a “ privileged mixed marriage ”. Otto Schenk, on the other hand, had to temporarily join the " German Young People ", but was excluded again a little later because the National Socialists classified him as a " mixed race ".
Schenk grew up with his sister in the first district of Vienna and reported about it in the ORF documentary " Meine Innere Stadt " (2017).
After completing his training at the Max Reinhardt Seminar , he began his career at the Theater in der Josefstadt and at the Vienna Volkstheater . From 1953 he directed various productions in Viennese theaters. In 1957 he staged his first opera ( Die Zauberflöte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ) at the Salzburg State Theater . Schenk has played and staged at the most important theaters and opera houses in the world, including the Vienna Burgtheater , the Münchner Kammerspiele , the Vienna State Opera , the New York Metropolitan Opera , the Milan Scala and the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden , London. He worked on other opera productions for the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Bavarian State Opera and the Hamburg State Opera .
In 1956 Schenk married Renée Michaelis, whom he had met at the Reinhardt Seminar; In 1957 their son Konstantin was born.
From 1986 to 1988 Schenk was a member of the board of directors of the Salzburg Festival , from 1988 to 1997 Otto Schenk was director of the Theater in der Josefstadt (together with Robert Jungbluth ). For his expressive Wagner interpretations he received the " Anton Seidl Prize " ( Anton Seidl Award ) of the " Wagner Society of New York " in 2009 .
As a cabaret artist, Schenk already appeared in the Simpl cabaret in the 1950s , but in recent decades has delighted audiences throughout the German-speaking world with his reading evenings under the motto “Things to Laugh”. Numerous records accompany this activity in which he always plays the same role - the gift.

Schenk's direction and Damiani's equipment were based on the Commedia dell'arte , the framework for this was provided by a significantly reduced portal and a backdrop stage with a wooden floor and a glistening horizon, in front of which the singers repeatedly appeared like silhouettes. Only five years after the premiere, the controversial production was replaced by a mannerist-romantic new staging by Franco Zeffirelli , which was more closely following the performance tradition , and which was again conducted by Josef Krips.
