action

The film begins with a prologue in which the life story of the protagonist is told. As a child, Carl Fredricksen was enthusiastic about the adventurer and explorer Charles Muntz. On the way home he meets Ellie, who is also a fan of Muntz. She tells Carl about her desire to build a house next to the Paradise Falls in South America, which Muntz discovered, and unceremoniously gets shy Carl to promise her that. The two fall in love and eventually get married. They remain a couple and the desire for children and the happiness they share together make the childhood dream of secondary importance for the time being. But Ellie loses her child and they start to raise money to make their wish come true. But accidents and other incidents prevent this again and again. When Carl finally buys plane tickets to South America, Ellie - both of them have now grown old - becomes seriously ill and dies. An important piece of his life dies and Carl is lonely and sad when the action starts.

At the beginning of the film, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen still lives in his house, which a construction company now wants to buy up and tear down in order to build new buildings there. When one of the workers accidentally damages Carl's mailbox, Carl hits him on the head with his walking stick. He is incapacitated and is to be admitted to a retirement home. When the nurses want to pick him up, Carl flees with his house, which he makes flying with thousands of balloons. He finally wants to go to Paradise Falls.

Inadvertently, however, he takes the clumsy 8-year-old boy scout Russell with him, who had been looking under the porch for a snipe (invented by Carl) because he was supposed to "help an elderly person" in order to obtain the last of a series of badges. Despite the loss of the GPS device and a violent storm, the two finally make it to South America. When they crash into a rocky plateau in thick clouds and are thrown out of the house, they see Paradise Falls for the first time. However, you have to continue on foot as many balloons have burst and are pulling the low-hanging house behind you on ropes. You meet a huge, colorful bird that Russell's chocolate has attracted. Russell calls the bird "Kevin" - although he soon realizes that it is actually a female looking for its young. Russell says that he had imagined the wilderness differently and you get an insight into Russell's uncomfortable family circumstances. The trio is then joined by a dog named Dug, who can speak using a specially developed collar and tries unsuccessfully to catch Kevin.

The four are suddenly chased by a pack of dogs who are also talking. It turns out that the dogs belong to Charles Muntz, who is still on the hunt for the mysterious "Monster of Paradise Falls" whose discovery made him famous in Carl's childhood until scientists questioned the authenticity of the skeleton he was showing . To restore his reputation he has to catch it alive, which is why he lives in his airship Spirit of Adventure near Paradise Falls. Carl admits he is a big fan, and Muntz takes him and Russell out to dinner. Russell gossips and Muntz learns that the bird he is looking for is friends with his guests. Carl realizes that Muntz will stop at nothing to restore his reputation and flees the airship with Russell and Dug. Kevin is injured while trying to escape. Carl and Russell transport the injured Kevin to their boys on the flying house. Shortly before their destination, Kevin is caught by Muntz, who also sets Carl's house on fire. Carl saves his house from the flames and accepts that Muntz will take Kevin with him.

With fewer and fewer balloons left and the house sinking deeper and deeper, he uses his last efforts to bring it to Paradise Falls. The house sinks to the ground just before the falls. Sitting in the house, Carl flips through Ellie's adventure book again. Under the heading “What I want to experience” he finds photos from his and Ellie's life instead of the pages that were believed to be empty. Under the last photo of the two of them is handwritten “Thank you for the adventure - find yourself something new! With love, Ellie ”. Meanwhile, Russell tries to fly away with some balloons to help Kevin. Carl spontaneously decides to follow him. He throws all the furniture out of the house to make it easier.

During a fight in and around Charles Muntz's airship, Muntz falls into the depths. Carl's house is slowly sinking to the ground because of many destroyed balloons. Carl and Russell take Kevin to their boys in the airship. Then they fly home.

Back home, Russell receives an award for serving seniors. Russell's father was actually supposed to infect him with this; but instead Carl comes to award him. Instead of the Boy Scout Order, he puts a Grape Soda button on him from Ellie ("the Ellie Order"). Muntz's entire pack of dogs sits in the audience. Finally, Russell and Carl sit on the curb with an ice cream and count cars by color, just like Russell used to do with his father. The last scene shows Carl and Ellie's house - it landed exactly next to Paradise Falls and is now exactly where it belonged on Ellie's drawings.

In the end credits of the film, photos are shown showing that Dug is now living with Carl and that they are going on a lot of "little" adventures with Russel; in the end, life has become more beautiful for both of them.

Film music

The soundtrack comes mainly from Michael Giacchino . The tracks "Carl's Maiden Voyage", "Muntz's Dark Reverie" and "Meet Kevin In The Jungle" are interpreted by Skywalker Sound .

Production costs were $ 175 million.

The Salto Angel waterfalls , which are still remote today, were used as a model for the Paradise Falls. The character of Carl Fredericksen is based on the appearance and also in part on the movie characters of the US film star Spencer Tracy .

As with every Pixar film, the so-called "production babies" are also listed in the top credits ; these are the children of the Pixar team who were born during film production.

reception

Reviews

The top received mostly positive reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 98% of 280 reviews were positive, with the film achieving 8.7 out of 10 points. The film received a good rating at IMDb (8.3 / 10).

“[The film] makes us feel extremely happy and deeply sad. Those who are not moved to the heart from above must ask themselves whether they have one. Perhaps never before has a film succeeded in making the audience feel so vividly the pace at which life rushes by, leaving behind many unfulfilled dreams: [...] "

- Lars-Olav Beier : The mirror

“In a grandiose, dialogue-free opening montage, the film captures the homely happiness and helpless loss of the man who finally defends himself against his fate by giving wings to his threatened home. […] [In South America] the plot then follows more conventional patterns, […] In between, however , Oben repeatedly finds ingeniously simple and poetic images, […] images of loss, grief and death in a Disney film that is more adult than ever is. "

- Harald Pauli : Focus

"Carl, Russell and Kevin (that's the name of the bird of paradise) should still have their place in film history: as main characters in the first 3-D film that completely subordinated its famous new technology to storytelling."

- Hanns-Georg Rodek : Welt-Online

"That is a somewhat too penetrating mixture of psychotherapeutic knowledge and 'Overcome yourself!' - rhetoric."

- Christina Nord : taz-online

"Pete Docter's 'Up' is full of weird ideas and yet mostly melancholy - because it's about always looking ahead, no matter how much you've loved in the past."

- S. Vahabzadeh : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Pixar's big and surprising family entertainment by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson ( Die Monster AG ) commemorates the adventure genre of pulp literature and film of the thirties with a tender fantasy. As in Wall-E - The last one clears up the earth , you can feel the epic spirit of Charlie Chaplin's great comedies here and let yourself be enchanted by it "

- Harald Witz : Moviemaze.de

“The animation is wonderful to look at and refreshingly 'not cute' - the dialogues are funny and the whole film exudes an old-fashioned warmth that is so rare. The imagery always manages to capture fantastic moments that are basically rooted in reality. The fact that the topics of old age, grief and loss are dealt with in a lovably smeary way is just one of the strengths of this film. "

- Oliver Lysiak : Moviepilot.de
