the monster Inc
Monster AG (original title: Monsters, Inc. ) is a computer-animated film released in 2001 by Pixar Animation Studios in collaboration with Disney . In its first week, the film had the best start of an animated film to date, with grossing over 62 million US dollars . In total, the film raised more than 561 million US dollars, making it the tenth most successful film among all computer-animated films (as of December 2015).
action
James P. "Sulley" Sullivan, a hairy, blue giant , and his best friend Michael "Mike" Glotzkovski (originally Wazowski ), a poisonous green eyeball on two legs, are monsters. They work together in Monster AG, an energy supplier in Monstropolis.
Sulley and Mike have a perfect command of their subject. They frighten human children at night in order to generate energy with their bloodcurdling screams, which is collected in containers and used to supply the energy supply to Monstropolis. However, physical contact with people is considered dangerous. Such “contaminated” monsters have to reckon with tough decontamination measures.
Just when it looks like the two of them are breaking the company's internal record again, an unfortunate event causes a human child to break into Monstropolis at Sulley's side. Mike and Sulley try to get rid of the child without attracting any attention.
Over the course of several unsuccessful attempts, Sulley develops a warm relationship with the little girl he calls Boo, while Mike tries to remain rational. Sulley can finally prevail in this regard, they save Boo from a life-threatening situation and bring her back to her nursery.
In the course of these events, the two uncover a conspiracy that leads to the top floor. That and the good experiences with Boo ultimately lead to the reorganization of Monster AG, which now draws energy from children's laughter, which is ten times more effective than screaming.
Production and publication
All figures, landscapes and effects were created on the computer . The monster Sullivan, for example, has over 2.3 million hairs. The scene in the door hall uses 35 million individual and identifiable doors and a kilometer-long transportation roller coaster. During production on the computer, the film was called Hidden City (working title) or Monsters, Incorporated .
In addition to the film, a short film called Mike's New Car was also produced. It was shown in theaters after the main film and was also released on DVD. One month after the premiere, the credits were exchanged for the main film . The new credits included a Blooper Reel with (intentionally rendered) botched scenes and a performance of the amateur actor musical mentioned by Mike in the film. The version with these credits can be found on the 4: 3 fullscreen DVD version and as a separate bonus feature on the 2-DVD Special Edition and on the Blu-ray . The television broadcast usually includes the original credits, but with the sound of the new credits.
The film was released in the United States on November 2, 2001 and was released in German cinemas on January 31, 2002. During its original theatrical release in 2001, the film grossed a total of around 525.4 million US dollars (445 million euros ; 478.4 million Swiss francs ). Of this, at 255.4 million US dollars (216.3 million euros; 232.6 million Swiss francs), more than half were in North America alone (United States and Canada) and 14.8 million US dollars (12 .5 million euros; 13.5) in Germany and 2.5 million US dollars (2.1 million euros; 2.3) in Austria. Adjusted for inflation , the total box office income at that time is roughly equivalent to US $ 756 million (EUR 640.4 million; 688.4).
In the run-up to the sequel , which came to theaters in 3D in 2013, Monster AG was also converted to 3D again in 2012 in North America (United States and Canada) and some foreign markets. The film grossed a further 36.3 million US dollars (30.7 million euros; 33.1).
The film thus achieved a nominal total box office income of around 561.6 million US dollars (475.7 million euros; 511.4 million Swiss francs).
synchronization
The synchronization took place at FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH under the dialogue direction of Frank Lenart , who also wrote the dialogue book .
Hartmut Neugebauer was chosen as Sulley's spokesman for the film's trailer , but Reinhard Brock spoke for him in the film itself .

continuation
A second film was released in German cinemas on June 20, 2013 under the title Die Monster Uni , and made its debut in North America on June 21, 2013 under the original title Monsters University . The film tells the story of "Die Monster AG" and is therefore the first prequel for a Pixar film. He describes the first meeting of Sulley and Mike and the development of their friendship. Directed by Dan Scanlon ( Cars ), the screenplay is by Andrew Stanton ( WALL · E - The last one cleans up the earth ).
criticism
"Very entertaining, technically and creatively perfect computer-animated cartoon fairy tale full of wit and speed, which reverses the classic mythical dramaturgy and turns monsters into lovable heroes who convince with their vivid character drawings."
Others
The Japanese sushi restaurant where Mike Glotzkovski has dinner with his girlfriend Celia is called Harryhausen's and alludes to the name of the American animation technician Ray Harryhausen , who developed the special effects for numerous adventure and monster films from the 1940s onwards and is considered a pioneer in this field. The scene in which the monstrous horrors around the blue monster Sulley march into the door hall against a bright background is very similar to a scene in the film Armageddon - The Last Judgment from 1998, in which several astronauts in orange suits surround actor Bruce Willis in slow motion to go to a missile for a mission, accompanied by a solemn patriotic address by the US President.
