His breakthrough came in 1981 with one of the world's most successful German films, Das Boot, as the actor of the mischievous 2nd watch officer. 1993 followed the role of Willi Riesenhuber, an SS officer, in Steven Spielberg 's Schindler's List . Furthermore, Semmelrogge played in individual episodes of well-known German television series such as the Fahnder , Praxis Bülowbogen , Liebling Kreuzberg and several times in the metropolitan area . In the 1990s he continued his series shooting of Die Männer vom K3 , Freunde fürs Leben , Anna Maria - A woman goes her way , Coast Guard and in several episodes of The Streets of Berlin . In the summer of 2010, Semmelrogge took over the role of Israel Hands for the sick Benjamin Kernen at the Pirate Open Air in Grevesmühlen . After this success he was there again in the summer of 2011, but this time in the role of the legendary pirate Sir Stede Bonnet. He took on the same role in the 2012 season. Most recently, he was seen in the Small Theater in Bonn Bad Godesberg. Until December 2013 he played there with his son in The Dead Eyes of London .
From 13th to 27th September 2013 he was a participant in the reality show Promi Big Brother on Sat.1 and came in 5th place.

He lived with her in Ventura (California) , Mallorca and Boltenhagen, among others . Martin Semmelrogge's children, actors Dustin Semmelrogge and Joanna Semmelrogge , come from relationships before and between marriages.
Since the 1980s, Semmelrogge has been on trial repeatedly and has been sentenced to several fines and imprisonment, mainly for traffic offenses such as driving without a license , but also for shoplifting and drug possession.
