Friends for Life is a German television series of the Second German Television (ZDF), which was produced between 1992 and 2001 by the new German Film Society mbH (ndF) in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

background

The starting point of the action is a suicide attempt by the indebted elderly general practitioner Dr. Walter Leibrecht. He can no longer hold the house and practice that his father had previously run. The young doctors who happened to be present, Bernd Rogge (gynecologist), Stefan Junginger (internist) and Daniel Holbein (pediatrician) save his life. Leibrecht offers each of them the practice for sale. After none of the three can raise the money alone, they team up and open a group practice. In addition to the patients, the friendship that develops between the three doctors and their private life are at the center of the action. In the course of the action, they enter into relationships or marriages that often break up again, and they start families. Walter Leibrecht and medical assistant Rüdiger Kissling with his changing colleagues are also key components of the series. Bernd Rogge is found murdered at the beginning of the third season. He had previously planned a vacation and asked his college friend Jörg Sommer to take his place. After a short period of reflection, Jörg decides to join the group practice. At the end of the sixth season, Stefan Junginger follows his partner Laura Domin to the USA. Jörg and Daniel then want to close the practice, but after a tragic accident with Rüdiger, Gregor Kolb comes into their lives as his treating doctor and eventually becomes Stefan's successor. After his relationship with Jutta Brandt failed, Daniel Holbein decided to go to a monastery. The series ends shortly after Jörg and Gregor in Dr. Christoph Eichhorn have found a new pediatrician for their practice.

Characters

Dr. Bernd Rogge ( Gunter Berger ) is a gynecologist . He has an eventful affair with the baroness Birgit von Teuffel and has a dissolute lifestyle. Later he falls in love with Roswitha Schütze, finally separates from Birgit and wants to be a father for Roswitha's daughter Kirsten, whose biological father is in prison. After some back and forth, Bernd and Roswitha want to get married, but on the way to the hen party, Roswitha suffers a car accident, as a result of which she dies. As a result, Bernd fights for custody of Kirsten, which her aunt Ilse Lohse claims. Since he has better chances as a married man, he enters into a marriage of convenience with the social worker Friederike Philipp. Friederike falls in love with Bernd, who, however, revives his affair with Birgit after Roswitha's death. Eventually he is shot by Birgit's jealous husband Nikolai Baron von Teuffel.

Dr. Stefan Junginger ( Michael Lesch ) was an internist in the hospital before the group practice was opened. He falls in love with the pianist Andrea Wolf, whose career is just about to start. Both come together and Andrea becomes pregnant. At the end of the first season they both get married. But Andrea is not happy with the role of mother. She is giving more concerts and planning a tour. Stefan breaks up with her after catching her cheating with bassist Steve Connolly. Andrea decides against her marriage and her son Hannes, whom Stefan now brings up alone with "Grandpa Fricke". In the third season he meets the taxi driver Hanna Uhlenhorst and the two of them also take the orphaned Kirsten with them. Due to Stefan's indecision about their relationship, Hanna breaks up with him shortly before the wedding. Later he falls in love with the model Laura Domin, who initially refuses to enter into a relationship with him because of her feelings of guilt towards her disabled sister. In the meantime, Stefan is in a coma due to an accident. Eventually Stefan and Laura decide to get married. When Laura receives a job offer in the USA , the whole family emigrates.

Dr. Daniel Holbein ( Stephan Schwartz ) is a pediatrician . He is always on the road with his racing bike and is very interested in Eastern meditation and the associated lifestyle. He is with Stefan's sister Susanne Junginger for a short time, but both have too different interests. After the separation he flies to Sri Lanka to see a guru in order to find himself. Shortly afterwards he comes back. At the beginning of the fourth season he married Dr. Beate Chevalier, who works in a hospital. Both want children, but Daniel is sterile . Shortly afterwards, Beate goes to Bosnia for an aid organization . She comes back early in the fifth season and has three children with her. But the children cannot stay with them. Beate cannot cope with the loss and goes to Africa . In the seventh season he is with Jutta. At the beginning of the eighth season, Daniel goes to a monastery and finally leaves the practice.

Dr. Walter Leibrecht ( Alexander May ) has sold his practice to the trio of doctors. He enters into a relationship with Daniel's mother Marlies Holbein, who was his patient years earlier. On the one hand, he benefits from their wealth, but on the other hand, shares their interests in travel, culture and higher social circles only to a limited extent. This constantly tests their relationship. When Marlies has to leave Germany on the run from tax investigations, they finally separate. Walter is always at the side of the entire practice team with words and deeds. In the middle of the sixth season he learns that he has a daughter who is coming to visit him.

Dr. Jörg Sommer ( Bernd Herzsprung ) comes to the practice to replace Bernd. He was hired by Bernd as a vacation replacement. Jörg is married to Ruth and has a young son named Philipp. Philipp causes trouble for both of them in the fourth season. He is always absent from school, which he later even drops out of, much to the displeasure of his parents. At the end of the seventh season, Jörg and Ruth decide to get a divorce. Nothing stands in the way of a relationship with the young student Natascha Amberg. She later briefly took over the representation for Daniel.

Dr. Gregor Kolb ( Karsten Speck ) is a surgeon in a clinic. He operates on Rüdiger when he is seriously injured. Jörg suspects him to have screwed up at the beginning , but after everything has been clarified, Daniel and Jörg offer him the open position in the practice. Gregor is with Emma, who is still married. Her husband is a banker and has a relationship with a man. Emma and her husband only have a fictitious marriage, otherwise he would be fired from the bank. Gregor and Emma move in together and have a baby daughter, Lisa. Emma dies at the end of the eighth season.

Dr. Christoph Eichhorn ( Frank Jordan ) is a pediatrician and takes over the vacancy in the practice after Daniel's departure. He has a little brother named Kai who he is the legal guardian of .

Renate Paulus ( Gisela Peltzer ) was already at Walter's office hour and has recently tried hard to save the practice. She is the “good soul” of the practice and sometimes struggles with her new, younger colleagues. After the death of Bernd Rogge, she lost the joy of work and gave up her job.

Andrea Junginger, b. Wolf ( Maren Schumacher ) is a pianist who is on the verge of her big breakthrough when she meets Stefan. For his sake, she cuts her engagements and decides to have her baby; before that she marries Stefan. She later realizes that it is difficult to combine family and work. With a heavy heart she decides to go back to work. She later cheats on Stefan with bassist Steve Connolly and from then on only cares about her career. After separating from Steve, during a brief guest performance in Lübeck, she was disappointed to see that Stefan's life went on without her and that he found a new love in Hanna who became like a mother for Hannes.

Rüdiger Kissling ( Marek Erhardt ) was previously a nurse and is brought into the practice team by Walter. He enters into a relationship with Friederike Rogge and during this time develops a close relationship with her stepdaughter Kirsten. At the same time, the two fall in love with new partners and separate. Rüdiger's new relationship with his colleague Julia Talbach breaks up after she leaves the city as a result of an attack and an attempted rape. At the beginning of the sixth season, Rüdiger will host the radio show "Night Talk". At the beginning of the seventh season he had a serious car accident that left him with paraplegia . He moves in with his colleague Bärbel Schmitz, who has been interested in him for a long time, but is initially completely withdrawn.

Kirsten Schütze (Janine Dissel) is Roswitha's daughter. She does not know her biological father and Bernd Rogge takes his place as Roswitha's partner. After Roswitha died as a result of a car accident, Bernd fights for custody of Kirsten and therefore even enters into a marriage of convenience with the social worker Friederike. A few weeks later, Bernd is shot by his lover's husband, whereupon Kirsten initially lives alone with her stepmother Friederike and later with her new partner Rüdiger. After separating from Rüdiger, Friederike leaves the city with her new partner Rolf Küster and leaves Kirsten behind. She stays with Daniel and Beate for a short time, who really want a child. After the three of them don't get on well together, Kirsten finds a new home at Jens Fricke's farm with Stefan and Hanna. She goes to the USA with Stefan's new partner Laura and Hannes.
