When the animals left the forest (in the first season when the animals left the forest ) is a European animated series based on the book series The Animals of Farthing Wood by then Colin based. It is about the destruction of natural habitat by humans and the resulting flight of animals.
action
The Thalerwald is being destroyed by people and their machines. The animals living in this forest then go on a long journey to find a new, suitable home. They swear an oath stating that the animals will help each other during the journey and that no one will eat the other. The oath comes from the badger's father and is called “Oath for Mutual Protection”: Raise right paw, “I (the name of the animal) hereby solemnly swear not to eat any of us while we are on our way to this place of the toad, he is the guide of the journey ”. The fox becomes the leader of the journey. The oath remains in place until the end (with the exception of a short start in the Weißhirschpark) and runs as a red thread through the series until the end of the third and final season. The animals (including red fox , toad , weasel , badger , mole , adder , rabbit , field mice , voles , shrews , squirrels , owls and kestrels ) find their way to the white deer park at the end of the first season, which is their home in the following seasons. However, not all animals make the long and dangerous way there, some it is fatal, u. a. the hedgehogs who fail to cross a motorway or the pheasants who cannot survive a stay on a farm.
The second season is more about the family life of the animals, so the first fox children (Däumerin, Anmut, Freundlich and Keck) are born here and some disputes arise between the animals already living in the park and the new ones. Finally, the park is divided, so that the Thalerwald animals live on one side, protected by the oath. This is only broken by the kestrel, which kills a field mouse. The climax is the conflict between the blue foxes and the red foxes , where “fox” and “scarred face” clash several times. At the end of the season, however, Scarface is killed by the adder and there is peace between the blue foxes and the red foxes thanks to an alliance of two foxes (the red fox Grace and the blue fox stray (son of Scarface)). A special feature here is that there is a change of perspective . The son Keck, who leaves the park in an argument with his father, decides never to return to the park. From his perspective is always described again, he rescues a sow before a leghold trap , but it itself injured eye. When battered, he meets a jackdaw , a St. Bernard (Rollo) and later his companion, who is expecting offspring from him. Windspiel wants to raise these offspring in the park. In front of the park, however, Keck dies and is visited again by the father and mother fox.
In the third season the herds of blue foxes have disappeared, but other problems threaten the animals. Rats try to take the white deer park under the leadership of the rat boss Bulli, some animals are captured and removed by humans and the river is poisoned, whereby the big white deer dies and Rek becomes the new leader. In the end, however, the animals succeed in driving the rats away. They also find out that many animals have been relocated to a safe park nearby as the White Deer Park is full. Rek is replaced by the peaceful white stag Lustig. In the last episode, the owl appears with her new companion and reports on the last remains of the Thalerwald. After the battle against the rats, the fox appoints Placker (grandson of the fox and son of Keck) as the new leader, because through him he has a direct connection to the oath. The fox steps into the setting sun with Rek, whose park has now been merged with the White Deer Park, this can be interpreted as a sign of his near death.

It was first broadcast in Germany on January 3, 1993 on First German Television . The series ran in over 20 countries and has been repeated several times in Germany to this day. The first episodes were released on video. In France, a DVD of the first season was released in February 2009. In Germany, the DVD for the first season was released at the end of September 2009, the DVD for the second season on May 27, 2011 and the third season on February 24, 2012. A remastered edition of the first season was also released on DVD. A remastered edition of the second season will appear on March 25, 2016.
music
The German version of the series was accompanied by the song “Never give up”, which was shown as a video clip before the episodes when it was first broadcast and can be heard in the credits in the first season.
The song was produced by Giorgio Moroder and sung by a duo called Corinna & Dirk (Dirk Weidner). It was also released as a maxi CD and vinyl single in 1993. There are two versions of the video clip, in one you can see the two performers. Both versions contain excerpts from the series.
The other versions use a classically orchestrated orchestral melody for the beginning and the end credits.
Booklet rows
From 1993 the comic series When the animals left the forest was published by Bastei-Verlag . The plot had only very loose references to the television series; Although the escape of the animals from the Thalerwald and their journey to the “deer park” (as it was called here) as well as the subsequent fight against the blue fox played a role here too, the specific adventures during and after the journey mostly differed in series and booklets considerable. The owl in the booklet row is male, the mole and badger do not die and the small animals have different character traits.
From 1994 to 1996, 130 issues were published by Die Tiere aus dem Talerwald , a magazine for children on all aspects of nature and the environment. The stories of the television series were retold in the booklets and their characters formed the connecting elements for the other sections.
