Behind bars - Der Frauenknast (short: HG or HiGi ) was a German television series in the form of a soap opera , which told the dramaturgically exaggerated everyday life in a prison for women. The series was broadcast from September 22, 1997 to February 13, 2007 on the private broadcaster RTL .

background

The first episode was broadcast on September 22, 1997 on the private broadcaster RTL, where the series was broadcast every Monday evening until November 20, 2006, seven years even without a summer break . Since December 5, 2006, the series has aired every Tuesday at 1:05 am. The series was produced by Grundy UFA TV Produktions GmbH on the former military site of the "Wavell Barracks" in Berlin-Wilhelmstadt ( Spandau district ) under the direction of Dagmar von Chappuis, Roger Wielgus, Axel Bock, Sebastian Monk, Bodo Schwartz, Oren Schmuckler , Heinz Dietz, Olaf Götz, Conny Dohrn and others.

The action takes place in the fictional prison Reutlitz in Berlin. The individual episodes build on each other. As is typical for a soap opera , new storylines are regularly added to the series and intertwined with one another, while others then run out ( pigtail dramaturgy ). In this context, lesbian love relationships, drug deals, attempted escape, disputes with prison officers (“turnkey”) as well as crimes such as murders are described. Often prison jargon used. After a while, Christine Walter (played by Katy Karrenbauer ), a bank robber and an authority figure among the other prisoners, became the most important and well-known role beyond the regular audience .

Despite the sometimes absurd and unrealistic plot, the series has earned a comparatively good reputation for the quality of the acting, as in contrast to many daily soaps, almost exclusively trained actors were used - most of them with theater experience.

In addition to a permanent cast of actors since the beginning of the broadcast, there are roles that are only temporarily introduced into the plot; on the other hand, roles that are reintegrated into the series after sometimes longer breaks. The breaks are also used to make a character change and make it plausible. As a result, the series has a balanced balance of popular characters and their opponents, both among the inmates and among the prison staff. An example of such changes is the figure of Jutta Adler . These rotations, which resulted in more or less long breaks in broadcasting for most roles, made it possible to meet the needs of the dramaturgy as well as the respective actress of this soap opera. Some of the characters in the series that are only temporarily present have met with particular approval from the audience. An example is the unscrupulous prison inmate Natascha Sanin played by Susann Uplegger or the story about Dr. Kerstin Herzog and Sascha Mehring , whose story has been accompanied by four novels.

From a dramaturgical point of view, elements of action , romance, suspense, etc. serve a broad spectrum of viewer interests. The stylistic device of irony is often used, which happens in such a way that certain audiences are addressed by the mere wording or the unreflected action, while other audiences recognize the irony and feel addressed as well.

When Mona Klare got out of the series Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten in 2000 , the Barbara Graf she portrayed was jailed. The set from Behind Bars served as the setting and the characters Melanie Schmidt and Horst Dahnke , who live there, were part of the plot for some episodes. In the same year, an episode of the series The Puma - Fighters with a Heart also played in Reutlitz , with Jutta Adler , Birgit Schnoor and prison inmates played by permanent extras . Through guest appearances and crossovers, Hinter Gittern has become part of the common series universe of Everything that counts , The Puma - Fighter with a Heart , Good Times, Bad Times , Big City Dreams , SK Babies and Unter Uns .

After a relatively short 14th season (20 episodes), the series went on a summer break for the first time in June 2005. On August 22, 2005 a special was broadcast (What happened in Reutlitz?) , Which heralded the return of the role of Jutta Adler . In addition, the plot of the previous season was summarized in flashbacks, which should make it easier for new viewers to get into the series action. The 15th season, which began on September 12 with a double episode, ran unusually long with 33 episodes. After a final double episode on May 22, 2006, the series took a second summer break. It was completely new from September 2006 in its 16th season under the motto Behind Bars - RELOADED! presents. New backdrops, such as a protection zone in the prison yard, a different camera technology and a "back to the roots" thinking in the story made for a changed appearance. In addition, some characters, some of which had been established for many years, were no longer taken into account in the further action, although their disappearance was not explained. A total of 19 new characters were introduced.

In the course of the 16th season, falling audience figures led the program managers to decide to let the series run out and to broadcast the last episodes on Tuesday night. The last episode aired on February 13, 2007 at 1:05 am. In the last scene the prison gate opened first and then the lock. All participants left Reutlitz in the back light. Only director Juliane Sürth ( Susanne Schäfer ) remained on the stop marking of the prison yard. The last sentence was pronounced by Christine Walter after she had looked back at the director for a moment: "Wait for me!" . Whether this last scene is supposed to be a dream of a serial character or a very unrealistic fictional reality remains open.

By the end of February 2007, all the sets on the grounds of the old British barracks in Berlin Spandau had been torn down. Only the backdrops of the prison nursery, which is located a bit away from the main and production site, and the prison's own chapel have been preserved for posterity, but are becoming increasingly dilapidated.

As offshoots to the series, there are novels in which, for example, previous stories about people from the series are told or events from the series that were particularly well received by the audience are examined in more detail (e.g. The Vattkes - for life and death ). There is also a computer game of the same name ( genre : Adventure ) along with a sequel and a mobile game for the series. In addition, two music albums were recorded with the stars from behind bars . The included titles also served as the soundtrack of the series episodes for a while. A wall calendar for the series is also published annually.

Released on July 23, 2010, the DVD box for the 15th season contains two bonus episodes (379z A Woman Picks Up And 380z Haltlos ) that were not broadcast on television. The main plot of these two episodes about Ginger and Daniela was shortened afterwards, the subplots about Annabelle , Jeannette , Ilse , Esther and Teresa were largely deleted and replaced by the storyline about Walter , Manu and their sister Jana . The original two episodes became the final episode 379 (A woman punching her way through) , but it has a different ending. While Daniela is taken home by Jutta at the end of the non-broadcast episodes , she is suspended by her at the end of episode 379 that has been broadcast.

From September 13, 2004, the first episodes of the series (with the subtitle How it all began ) were repeated after the new episode at 11:15 pm. Since the subsequent RTL Nachtjournal was not supposed to be postponed in its early days, the episodes were shortened by a few minutes each. In January 2005, the slot was moved from Monday to Thursday before the repeat with the April 7th episode was finally canceled. The first ten seasons of the series were repeated on the pay TV channel Passion from April 14, 2008 to April 22, 2013 on Mondays at 8:15 p.m. Since November 18, 2013, the other episodes have been broadcast on weekdays at 1.30 p.m. in the afternoon program in double episodes. In mid-February 2015, Passion skipped seasons 8, 9 and 10 for licensing reasons. Between December 1, 2013 and January 12, 2015, an episode was published every day on the video-on-demand portal RTL NOW , which was free for 30 days was available. Since the end of the 30 days it has been possible to rent the individual episodes. From September 26, 2015 to March 13, 2016, the series ran weekly on Super RTL . She has been on RTLplus since June 6, 2016 .

An exciting season cliffhanger in the style of successful US series was specially spun for this purpose.
