Production and broadcast
The telefilm Einstein was on 23 March 2015 to the Pay TV transmitters Sat.1 emotions broadcast and on 24 March 2015 to the Free TV transmitters Sat.1 .
One day after the German free TV premiere on March 25, 2015, Sat.1 announced that the television film would be continued as a television series. According to Jochen Ketschau , the head of in-house production on Sat.1, the reasons for this were the good ratings and the good and high response from the audience. The first six episodes were filmed in Bochum from April 7th to June 8th, 2015 . On February 12, 2016, Sat.1 decided to extend the first season by four more episodes, which were then shot in spring 2016. This should delay the broadcast of the first season with ten episodes until autumn 2016. During the presentation of the program by the station Sat.1 for the 2016/17 television season, it became known that the broadcast date had been postponed to spring 2017.
After all, the first season was broadcast on Pay TV from January 5 to February 2, 2017 on Thursdays at 8:15 p.m. in double episodes on Sat.1 emotions . In free TV , the first season was broadcast on Sat.1 from January 10 to February 7, 2017, also on Tuesdays at 8:15 p.m. in double episodes.
On February 6, 2017, Sat.1 announced that the series had been extended for a second season. It should also include ten episodes. Filming for the second season began at the end of August. These were Dominic Müller , Felix Stienz and Oliver Dommenget obliged as new directors and thereby replace its predecessor Thomas Jahn . Furthermore, Martin Ritzenhoff and Matthias Dinter as screenwriters and Michael Souvignier and Dominik Frankowski as producers operate.
The ten new episodes were broadcast from February 12 to March 12, 2018 on Mondays from around 9:45 p.m. in double episodes on the pay TV channel Sat.1 emotions. On February 13, 2018, Sat.1 also began broadcasting the second season in double episodes. The season finale was broadcast there on March 13, 2018.
In April 2018, the series was extended by a third season, which included 12 episodes for the first time. The first broadcast took place on January 7, 2019 for the first time on Mondays at 9:15 p.m. on Sat.1.
On March 29, 2019, the series was canceled after three seasons.
reception
criticism
“'Einstein' is the liveliest, most fast-paced German series for a long time. Stories and style follow exactly the pattern that Thomas Jahn (director and camera) has already given in the TV movie: A brilliant and also extremely good-looking scientist (Tom Beck) is at the police's side as an advisor in particularly tricky cases; a starting position that looks like the pattern of an American series. This also applies to the somewhat clichéd representatives of the police: the attractive inspector Elena Lange (Annika Ernst) is red-haired, far smarter than her superior and the only woman far and wide who does not lose her knees when she sees Felix Winterberg (Beck). Your boss Tremmel (Rolf Kanies) is not quite the smart person he thinks himself is, but sits on the longer lever and has the professor in hand because Winterberg, as is explained again and again in the first three episodes, was caught buying drugs. [...] Overall, the constellation is more grateful for the director than for the authors: Sometimes the cutting frequency is almost breathtaking compared to the average speed of German series. Jahn's work with the camera is similarly agile. "
"So this new format already seems like an anachronism in its first episode : a little bit greasy, a little ingratiating, with catchy tracking shots, predictable plots and washable characters who seek their comedic fulfillment solely in exaggeration. Subtle jokes, serious (!) Inconsistencies in the figure drawing, whatever kind of complexity, regardless of whether aesthetic or narrative: all of this is completely alien to this series. "
Audience ratings (Sat.1)
The highest audience rating to date (2.56 million viewers and 7.7 percent) was achieved by Sat.1 with the broadcast of the first episode ( Ballistics ) on January 10, 2017. The lowest reach to date among the total audience (1.42 million viewers) was measured twice on March 6, 2018. The seventh and eighth episodes of the second season, entitled Anaphylaxis and Compression, ran .
On average, the ten episodes of the first season on Sat.1 reached 2.35 million viewers, which corresponds to 7.3 percent. In the target group of 14 to 49 year olds, an average of 1.16 million and 10.8 percent were determined. The second season saw an average of 1.72 million viewers, which corresponds to 5.4 percent. 8.3 percent of 0.87 million was measured in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds.
