In prison is a German comedy series that is broadcast by ZDFneo . The first season aired from May 21, 2015 to June 25, 2015. The second followed from July 27, 2017 to August 10, 2017.

action

It is the everyday life of the JVA shown detainees Söhtstraße Erdem azimuth, Manfred "Manni" Schuster and Alexander "Graf" Vontrab. Erdem was the boss of a gang and was convicted of many different offenses. At the trial he defended himself unsuccessfully. He has not yet been in prison for a year. Manni, a former bank clerk, caught his boss red-handed sleeping with his wife and freaked out: he stapled his testicles to a desk. He has been incarcerated for seven years for grievous bodily harm. Alexander was convicted of real estate fraud and violating the Narcotics Act . As a celebrity broker, he sold properties that did not belong to him. He is therefore used to a very luxurious lifestyle.

The liberal therapist Nora Meindl believes in the good in people and hopes to convert the inmates for the better. She usually offends with the prison director Kempers. He always tries to appear in a good light with his superiors, as his reputation is catastrophically bad due to several incidents in the prison. He runs the prison with as little effort as possible - so there are no searches of the cells and rooms with escape tunnels are simply locked forever instead of filling up the tunnels.

The Russian thug and leader Ivan makes life difficult for them again and again . In the background, however, the strings are pulled by inmate Semmelrogge from Block C, who later escapes after a revolt.

Production and broadcast

The first season was announced for 2015 in October 2014. The film was shot in 2014 from mid-November to mid-December in the Söhtstrasse JVA in Berlin-Lichterfelde, which was closed in 2010 . The first season was broadcast on ZDFneo from May 21, 2015 to June 25, 2015 .

A year later, on July 12, 2016, ZDFneo confirmed the production of a six-part second season, which began shooting on the same day. The film was shot until August 14, 2016. In contrast to the changing scriptwriters of the first season, Benjamin Karalic joined as head writer. The second season was first broadcast on ZDFneo from July 27, 2017 to August 10, 2017 in double episodes from 11 p.m.

Trivia / running gags

  • The fictional JVA Söhtstraße was named after the real JVA Söhtstraße ( location ) in Berlin-Lichterfelde , where the series was filmed. This served as a women's prison from 1906 to 2010 and then several times as a film set.
  • Guest roles keep their real surnames several times (motivational speaker Trepper , judge Karrenbauer ) or even their entire names ( Martin Semmelrogge , Serdar Somuncu ), but do not play themselves.
  • Martin Semmelrogge plays his star role based on his real imprisonments.
  • Johanna Maria Knothe plays herself in her role as a ZDF reporter (see e.g. Bambule ) .
  • Judge Karrenbauer is called "Walter" twice by Kempers in reference to the series Behind Gates - Der Frauenknast .
  • Erdem speaks in extremely exaggerated ghetto slang and often improves other correct sentences into his correct pronunciation.
  • Stereotypical social clichés are exaggerated, like the intellectually uneducated, always inflated Russian Ivan.
  • Mr Kempers' assistant always stands protectively behind her boss like a Valkyrie . She doesn't speak a single word, but her bossy look says more than a thousand words.

DVD release

The first season was released on August 7, 2015 and the second season on September 15, 2017.

reception

The reviews of the first season were mostly positive:

“The plot is no longer worth mentioning. [...] That rarely leads to more than situation comedy , but it is often quite funny. [...] Because the characters are hopelessly overdrawn, the gags quickly turn in circles. Even breaking through the stereotypes is not a surprise here, but is initiated with a rumbling: farmer's theater behind bars. But then Denis Moschitto falls back into the picture. And nobody can resist this cute gangster with a not too lush mind, but all the more heart for it [...]. "

- Oliver Jungs : Column on the first episode in the FAZ

“The pun [...] is enormous. [...] The staging delivers madness in quick, smooth rhythm; the 25 minutes of each episode are well filled with quotes and subplots. [...] 'Im Knast' [...] comes along as a high-speed buddy comedy. [...] the series is not designed as a social panorama, the fun is purely an end in itself - but staged so virtuoso that it does not have to hide from modern US sitcoms. "

- Christian Buß : Column on the first episode in Spiegel Online

"It is this bizarre joke that makes ZDFneo's in-house production Im Knast ursocial."

- Julia Weigl : Column on the first episode in the SZ
