Cars 2 is an American animated film that was released on July 28, 2011 (in Germany) and was produced by Pixar . It is the sequel to the 2006 film Cars . In the film, the racing car Lightning McQueen (voiced by Manou Lubowski ) and his friend Hook, the tow truck (voiced by Reinhard Brock ) , travel to Japan and Europe to take part in the World Grand Prix. however, Hook is mistaken for an American agent by the British secret service.

John Lasseter directed while Brad Lewis was co-director. Also, Cars 2 was the first John Lasseter to re-direct since the original Cars.

The film was published by Walt Disney Pictures and was released in the United States on June 24, 2011. It was announced together with Oben in 2008 - for 2012 - and is already the 12th animated film from this studio.

action

After Lightning McQueen wins the Piston Cup for the fourth time, he returns to the small town of Radiator Springs. Miles Axelrod, a former oil tycoon, reports on television about his conversion into an electric vehicle and promotes environmentally friendly energy. To this end, he created the first “World Grand Prix”, where the cars were powered by the environmentally friendly allinol fuel he developed. Although Lightning McQueen initially declined to participate, he agreed because of the provocations of the Italian Formula 1 racing car Francesco Bernoulli.

Meanwhile, countless “cucumber” cars under the direction of Professor Zündapp and an unknown leader are drilling for crude oil in the sea after they hit the world's largest oil field. Zündapp's plan is to ignite the Allinol-fueled cars of the World Grand Prix with the help of a radiation cannon disguised as a television camera in order to portray Allinol as dangerous and thus secure the profits from the oil field.

The first race of the World Grand Prix will take place in Tokyo . The British agent Finn McMissile and his assistant Holley Shiftwell try to uncover the plot and want to meet the American informant Rod Redline to hand over evidence during the race. However, Redline is captured by Zündapp's henchmen, but manages to slip the evidence on Hook. Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell are led to Hook, whom they confuse with Redline. They contact him over the team radio from Lightning McQueen's team and guide him out of the box. McQueen, who didn't notice any of this during the race, made a driving error due to the conversation and was narrowly defeated by Francesco Bernoulli. Thereupon, and because of McQueen's complaints about Hook's behavior during the welcome party the day before, there is a falling out with Hook, who starts the journey home disappointed.

The second race of the Grand Prix will take place in Porto Corsa in Italy, where there will also be a meeting of the “pickles” under Professor Zündapp. Hook is brought in by McMissile and Shiftwell to gather information. During the race, the "cucumbers" use their cannon and hit most of the participants. When the supposed danger of allinol fuel became known, Axelrod declared he would not use it during the last race in London . However, after winning the race, Lightning McQueen decides to ride allinol anyway and announces this in a television interview. Thereupon the "gherkins" decide to attack McQueen with the cannon in the last race. When he hears this, Hook's cover is blown and is captured along with Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell.

Hook has a dream that shows him his behavior from the point of view of others and then wakes up in the Big Bentley in London, where McMissile and Shiftwell are tied to the gears of the clockwork. He manages to break free and goes to warn his friends about a bomb in McQueen's box, not knowing that the pickles have attached the bomb to his cooler. During the race, the "cucumbers" try to shoot McQueen with the cannon, but this has no effect on him. They then decide to pursue and kill McQueen and Hook, but this is prevented by McMissile, Shiftwell and McQueen's friends. When they finally arrest Professor Zündapp, he reveals that only the builder of the bomb can deactivate it with his voice. Hook finds out that Miles Axelrod is the secret head of the conspiracy and confronts him with it. Hook recognized him through a photo of his engine conversions, Axelrod initially denies the allegations, but deactivates the bomb shortly before the countdown ends, thereby confessing the crime.

As a thank you for exposing the conspiracy, Hook is soon knighted by the Queen and returns with his friends to Radiator Springs, where they host the unofficial "Radiator Springs Grand Prix". At the end it is explained why the radiation cannon had no influence on McQueen: His team had secretly exchanged the allinol for real bio-gasoline.

criticism

According to Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 38% positive reviews with an average rating of 5.5 out of 10, rather mediocre to poor.

“An overly colorful, overstimulated computer animation film that is largely exaggerated by the agent subplot. At most thanks to the pleasing 3D aesthetics and many punch lines, it is still quite acceptable. "

"The second part of 'Cars' puts a lot of pressure on the gas, but the adventures around the Lightning McQueen racing car lack the usual charm of Pixar productions."

- Nina Rehfeld for Spiegel-Online

"After so many films that were told in an imaginative and heartwarming manner, the extraordinary pixel forge seems to have reached the point where they are running out of ideas."

- Jens Adrian on treffpunkt-kritik.de

“'Cars 2' offers a cheerful, colorful mix of fast-paced racing scenes and child-friendly espionage elements. The mixture of 'James Bond' and 'The Fast and the Furious' in the Pixar design is a happy, over-the-top animation adventure, the individual elements of which unfortunately never really harmonize with one another. For example, 'Cars 2', which inherited the script weaknesses of its predecessor, is once again not driving at the usual Pixar level despite the all-round renewal of the genre. "

- Stefan Geisler on filmstarts.de

The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
