Cold Mirror ( Engl. Cold mirror , cold mirror , cold mirror ') is the pseudonym of the German Webvideoproduzentin and presenter Kathrin Fricke (* 13. October 1984 in Bremen ). The pseudonym was inspired by the song Creatures That Kissed in Cold Mirrors by the dark metal band Cradle of Filth .

Fricke operates various YouTube channels, moderates radio and TV programs and publishes blog and vlog articles.

Life

According to his own statements, Fricke suffered from depression as a teenager . In an interview on the YouTube channel “clixoom” she said that among other things, the Harry Potter series and the desire to know how the series would continue gave her strength and saved her from suicide . However, she states that it was not just the exciting plot that she liked about the books, but rather “having something to look forward to.” Harry Potter is still one of the motifs of her artistic and comedic work to this day eventually got her first attention on the internet.

Fricke began early to record radio plays with a friend, which laid the foundation for her creative work. In 2000 she joined the team at MixX , a youth magazine in the open channel Bremer Umland (today Bürgerfunk Bremer Umland) as a volunteer editor . During this time she also set up her own web presence, where she published, for example, self-drawn pictures with fantasy motifs. Your fan fictions with the characters from the Harry Potter series soon took up a significant part of the website and first attracted attention on the Internet.

Fricke studied art history with a minor in philosophy at the University of Bremen .

Fricke has been a presenter in radio and television programs since 2010: She produced the program Der YOU FM Game Check with Coldmirror for the youth broadcaster of the Hessian radio station You FM , in which she tested computer games; by 2016 one of Fricke looking video clip show under the name was Coldmirror in ARD transmitter EinsFestival broadcast.

Prizes and awards

  • On February 20, 2011, Fricke was awarded the Gray Young Talent Award in the competition for the first German Web Video Award. She was also nominated in the Personality category. The Gray Young Talent Award was endowed with an offer of 5,000 €, which Fricke ultimately did not accept because the fee seemed too high to her.
  • On August 16, 2011, You FM and Kathrin Fricke were nominated for the German Radio Prize 2011 in the category Best Innovation .
  • In 2012 Fricke was a member of the jury for the second web video award .

Video art on the YouTube channel "Coldmirror"

The YouTube channel "Coldmirror" went online on October 2, 2006. The first videos consisted of archive material from Fricke's work at the editorial office of the Bremen community radio youth magazine MixX . After that, Fricke made most of the videos on his own.

From 2008 the channel rose to second place in the statistics of the most subscribed German-language channels. The first place was taken by the Justin Timberlakes channel , which was mistakenly registered in Germany. After correcting this bug, Coldmirror was officially the most subscribed German-speaking channel from February to October 2009. Until August 2016, your main channel was among the 100 most subscribed YouTube channels in Germany. Unlike most “big” YouTube channels, it doesn't monetize their videos.

Resynchronization of the Harry Potter film series

The channel first gained popularity through the re-synchronization of the Harry Potter films. From autumn 2006, Fricke dubbed the following films and uploaded them to YouTube: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (in Coldmirror: Harry Potter and a stone ), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ( Harry Potter and the secret porn cellar ) and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ( Harry Potter and the Plastic Cup [ sic ]). These appeared at irregular intervals in parts of almost ten minutes each, with ten parts of their synchronization usually covering a film. So far, the films have not necessarily been completely re-dubbed, individual scenes have been left out, re-edited or replaced by integrated images or video sequences.

Fricke's synchronization style allows the protagonists of the films to address taboo topics and allusions from pop and internet culture . She uses vulgar and fecal language , completely reinterprets many scenes in the films and distorts their original meaning. For example, a scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets , in which Severus Snape annoyed the protagonists Harry and Ron, reads a newspaper article about a turmoil they caused in the non-magical world and then reprimands them, was reinterpreted in such a way that Snape had an argument complains about a difficult crossword puzzle and asks the two students for a colloquial, six-letter word for the male reproductive organ . The characters also partially break through the fourth wall and recognize other characters as extras or make ironic allusions to the original plot. The individual synchronization parts are consistent throughout. The characters have the same characteristics in all episodes. However, the characters differ considerably from their behavior in the original film; in particular, Fricke attributes special sexual preferences such as homosexuality , pedophilia , zoophilia or the like to almost every character . In contrast to the original, a considerable number of insults are also exchanged.

Fricke speaks most of the characters himself, using a different vocal range and technique for each character, similar to the audio books spoken by Rufus Beck . In individual cases, acquaintances of hers are also involved: Since a joint battle rap song between the character Fresh Dumbledore and MC Voldemort , YouTube user Sk3pn4 (formerly “aequitaS”) has spoken Voldemort's voice in the synchronization. She also played the role of Viktor Krum.

In November 2008, YouTube's user account was temporarily deactivated because the rights holder of the Harry Potter films, Warner Bros. , saw possible copyright infringements in the parodies. According to YouTube Germany, however, the deactivation was a system error, because it should only have resulted in a warning for infringement of copyrights. After reactivating her channel, Fricke had to delete all resynchronizations due to the threat of a permanent ban, as these contained foreign video material. However, the synchronizations via links on the Coldmirror channel are still available because other users have re-uploaded the material.

Canal concept

Fricke follows a very relaxed concept in her videos for the coldmirror channel . Regular formats, as can be found with other YouTubers, are often interrupted by long breaks, sometimes canceled, redesigned and alternated with individual videos on other topics.

The channel primarily contains skits with Fricke alone or with friends in her apartment on various topics. Harry Potter has now become a rarer motif. So the formats Patzer , in which incorrect or funny newspaper clippings were satirically commented on the films and books, and the 5-minute Harry Podcast , in which the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is analyzed in great detail, were produced and their fictional character of the Fresh D , which is based on the Harry Potter character Albus Dumbledore, has been maintained for a long time by her, but nowadays the channel is shaped by varied themes.

There are also numerous animation videos created by Fricke himself on the channel, including her well-known Japanese sluts format , which parodies anime . Since October 2016, Coldmirror has been producing the weekly animation series StarStarSpace for funk on its channel , which contains and parodies elements from science fiction works. Other animation videos that she publishes on Coldmirror were originally produced for public television for educational purposes, including primarily political issues.

Other formats, which were created for television in their function, are partly uploaded to the coldmirror channel.

In addition to the main coldmirror channel , videos are uploaded to PlzDontSueColdmirror . These videos often contain material from protected films and series that is satirically modified by Fricke. So here you can find further synchronizations following the style of their famous Harry Potter synchronization. The canal was created as a result of the incorrect and now lifted closure of their main canal.

Your + coldmirrorgames + channel is now idle. It contains video reviews and game scenes for video games that have been produced for You FM, among others.

Fricke himself only uploaded Misheard Lyrics "Ismail YK" to her YouTube channel on February 3, 2011, when the video had already gained popularity in the YouTube community. It was also shown on the Bülent Ceylan Show on RTL on February 19, 2011 and evoked a strong media response with contributions and the like. a. in the online edition of the taz and on Sat.1 .
