The SAS-968 " Saporoshez " ( Ukrainian ЗАЗ-968 "Запорожець" , Russian ЗАЗ-968 "Запорожец" ) and its successor SAS-968A are small cars from the Soviet , now Ukrainian , manufacturer Saporisky Avtodobilebudiwny from 1971 (to. SAS) 1979.

The SAS-968 was presented to the public in October 1970. The small car has a self-supporting body that is similar to that of the NSU Prinz 4 , which was built in 1961 and whose designers were in turn inspired by the US Chevrolet Corvair . Like their predecessors, the SAS-968 and SAS-968A models also have V4 engines installed lengthways in the rear, some of which are made of aluminum , in conjunction with four-speed gearboxes.

SAS-968 (1971-1973)

Despite the new type number, there were only a few changes compared to the predecessor SAS-966. Only a few additional lights were installed. The engine with 1196 cc capacity and 40 hp (29 kW) at 4200 to 4400 / min continued to be used. There was also a variant with an output of 45 hp (33 kW) at 4400-4600 rpm. Depending on the engine, the cars can reach top speeds of 118 to 123 km / h. They accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 32 seconds. The petrol consumption was 7.4 liters per 100 km again lower than that of the predecessor.

SAS-968A (1973-1979)

1973 appeared the revised model SAS-968A. Among other things, this version no longer had a chrome grill. Instead, it received a chrome-plated decorative strip in the middle of the front panel. Since 1974 a deformable steering column , an anti-theft device and anchor points for the seat belts have been installed. In 1975 the corrosion protection was improved and a two-circuit brake system , a new carburetor and an improved exhaust system for the small car were developed. Some minor changes have also been made to the interior design, for example the design of the door handles.

SAS-968M (1979-1994)

SAS-968 in Germany

Like its predecessors, the SAS-968 also had a bad reputation in the GDR. The air-cooled rear engine tended to overheat, and the gasoline heater was also not considered to be reliable. In terms of engine power, however, the SAS-968 was superior to the Trabant 601 . The background noise was also loud, but because of the lower frequencies it was perceived as more pleasant than that of the Trabant. He also played advantages on bad roads.

Trivia

Because of its distinctive engine noise, the SAS-968 was popularly known as the " T-34 Sport".

In the Pixar animation film Cars 2 , the character Vladimir Trunkov is based on a SAS-968.
