Mirella Freni , actually Mirella Fregni (born February 27, 1935 in Modena ; † February 9, 2020 there ), was an Italian opera singer ( lyric soprano ).
Life
Freni, who came from a working-class family, was trained by her uncle Dante Arcelli. She made her debut in 1955 in the role of Micaëla in Carmen . At the beginning of her career she was supported by Herbert von Karajan . She became famous in roles such as Violetta ( La traviata ), Tatjana ( Eugen Onegin ) and Mimì ( La Bohème ), but also as Susanna in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro in the film adaptation by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle .
Freni and the Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda , with whom she recorded several operas from the Italian and French repertoire, were considered the opera's “dream couple”.
She was often the partner of Luciano Pavarotti , whom she had known since her youth. Among other things, she interpreted the opera La Bohème at his side on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the premiere . In September 2007 she commented on the live broadcast of the funeral service for Luciano Pavarotti in the RAI .
After a 50-year career, Freni retired in 2005. She was married to the Bulgarian-Austrian bass player Nikolaj Gjaurow for the second time . Mirella Freni died in Modena on February 9, 2020 at the age of 84.
