Theodor Guschlbauer
Theodor Guschlbauer (born April 14, 1939 in Vienna ) is an Austrian conductor .
Life
Theodor Guschlbauer studied at the Vienna Conservatory , which awarded him his diploma as a conductor in 1959. Formative teachers were above all Hans Swarowsky , also Lovro von Matačić and Herbert von Karajan .
He received his first significant engagement in 1961 with the Vienna Baroque Ensemble, which he headed until 1969. At the same time, he led the choir of the Vienna Volksoper from 1964 , then from 1966 he took over the position of first conductor at the Salzburg State Theater . Theodor Guschlbauer took his first professional steps in France in 1969 in Lyon, where he initially worked as the first conductor before he rose to the position of opera director in 1971.
In 1975 Theodor Guschlbauer was called back to the Vienna State Opera as second conductor . In addition, he simultaneously took on the position of general music director in Linz and as head of the Bruckner Orchestra , with which he remained connected for many years and with which he was guest conductor in 2009. In 1983 the conductor returned to France and shaped the music scene in Alsace for 14 years as conductor of the Strasbourg Philharmonic and as music director at the Opéra du Rhin . From 1997 to 2001 he was director of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic in Ludwigshafen am Rhein .
In 2001 the then 62-year-old Theodor Guschlbauer decided to work as a freelance conductor with well-known orchestras from now on. a. with the Vienna, Munich, London and Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra; the symphony orchestras in Berlin, London, the RAI and the Bayerischer Rundfunk; the orchestras of La Scala in Milan , the Roman Academy of Santa Cecilia, Romanesque Switzerland and Paris and the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. In addition to Europe, another focus of his work in recent years has been Japan. He has been conducting the Choeur Philharmonique de Strasbourg since 2017.
The festivals at which Theodor Guschlbauer is a frequent guest include Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, Verona, Lucerne, Montreux, Bregenz and Oxford. He has also participated in the Flanders Festival, the Prague Spring , the Chopin Festival in Warsaw and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and has conducted at the opera houses of Vienna, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Brussels, Lisbon and occasionally too again at the Opéra du Rhin.
Theodor Guschlbauer's repertoire includes around 100 opera titles as well as a large number of symphonic works. He was involved in over 60 records.
He shares his passion for classical music with his wife. He has a daughter and a son. Strasbourg has been his main residence since 1983.
