Ari Rasilainen

Ari Petteri Rasilainen (born February 18, 1959 in Helsinki , Finland ) is a Finnish conductor .

Life

Ari Rasilainen studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the conducting class of Jorma Panula and in Berlin with Arvid Jansons . He also studied violin with Aleksander Labko in Berlin . He then played first as a violinist in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and from 1980 to 1986 as section leader of the second violins in the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra . At the same time he performed as a soloist and took part in chamber music ensembles.

Rasilainen then began his conducting career in Finland, initially from 1985 to 1989 as chief conductor of the Lappeenranta City Orchestra . He then was Principal Guest Conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra until 1994 . From 1994 to 2002 he directed the "Norwegian Radio Orchestra Oslo ". From the 2002/03 season onwards, the Danish Aalborg Symfoniorkester elected him permanent guest conductor. Also from the 2002/03 season he succeeded Theodor Guschlbauer as general music director of the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate in Ludwigshafen . He held this position until the beginning of the 2009/10 season and went on a number of tours, for example to China in May 2005.

Since then, Rasilainen has also worked regularly with other major orchestras in Europe and North America. At the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki he conducted a. a. Lohengrin , The Magic Flute and Tosca . He was a guest conductor with several German radio symphony orchestras.

Rasilainen has been chief conductor of the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz since the 2016/17 season . To date, over 50 records have been recorded under his direction, including recordings of the symphonies of the Swedish late Romantic composer Kurt Atterberg . At the end of January 2020 it was announced that the city of Konstanz would not extend Rasilainen's contract beyond the 2020/21 season.
