Life

Karl Maria Zwißler was born on August 12, 1900 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. His father was a civil servant with the Royal Bavarian State Railways . After his school days, Zwißler studied mainly in Munich . His lecturers included Bernhard Sekles and Hans Knappertsbusch . He learned the most from Hans Knappertsbusch, especially his devotion to late Romantic music and sober and unspectacular conducting . Shortly afterwards he was taught by Hans Pfitzner . The lessons mostly took place in Pfitzner's house on the Ammersee . Course contents were conducting, composition and general musical design with their history and details. He was then taught by Erich Kleiber . He also learned singing from him . In 1924 he took up a position as Kapellmeister at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. After three years of professional experience, he went to the Deutsche Oper in Brno as a conductor in what is now the Czech Republic . Then he went to Düsseldorf and Darmstadt .

In 1933 he became first conductor at the Frankfurt Opera . After two years he became the musical director of the Frankfurt Opera. A year later he ended his engagement in Frankfurt am Main and went to Mainz in Rheinhessen . He was music director and Kapellmeister of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Mainz at Mainz State Theater . In 1942 he became director. After the Second World War he became general manager. In 1951 he received his habilitation . Four years later he resigned as general manager and concentrated more on conducting both inside and outside Germany. In 1956 he went to Stuttgart , where he took over the management of the performing arts at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . In 1958 he went back to Frankfurt am Main. Here he became head of training for conductors at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts . He also worked as a director . A year later he became professor for conductors at the Frankfurt University of Music. In 1966, Zwißler said goodbye to the Mainz State Theater. He was very dissatisfied and unhappy about working with the theater. His work force was now focused on his work in Frankfurt am Main. In 1976 he returned to the State Theater Mainz as a substitute in the Senium and became more and more reconciled with Mainz and those responsible for the theater. His nickname was " Pluto , Lord of the Underworld". This is mainly due to his calm, background work.

Karl Maria Zwißler died on September 15, 1984 in Mainz. He was 84 years old. He was buried in the main cemetery in Frankfurt am Main .
