Hannay is the name of a Scottish clan .
history
Although the name Hannay is most likely derived from the place Hannethe , nothing specific is known about it. The family's origins can be traced back to Galloway in southwest Scotland . The name Gillbert de Hannethe first appeared on the Ragman Rolls of 1296 presented to King Edward I of England. It is reported that the lands of Sorbie in Wigtownshire were acquired by the same Gillbert de Hannethe.
Unlike many other Scottish nobles and clans, the Hannays did not support Robert de Bruce , but John Balliol , because he was closer to them.
Chiefs
Ramsay William Rainsford Hannay died on January 10, 2004. He was followed by his son Dr. David R. Hannay.
Castles
- Sorbie Tower was once the seat of the Hannay family until it was sold to the Earl of Galloway. In 1965 the owner at the time donated it to the clan; Since then, Historic Scotland has been looking after the ruins.
