Sorbie Tower

Sorbie Tower , also Old Place of Sorbie , is a tower house around 1.5 km east of the Scottish town of Sorbie in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

In the 16th century the lands belonged to the Hannay clan . Sorbie Tower was built towards the end of the century. The four-storey defense tower has an L-shaped floor plan with 12.3 m or 7.8 m long legs. The legs are 7.3 m and 6.1 m wide. A round stair tower protrudes from the first floor in the inner corner of the building. Below is the entrance portal. The masonry is made of quarry stone with natural stone details and offset corner stones . Openings are bordered with rod ornaments , but only partially preserved. Sorbie Tower is now in ruins. The cantilevered corner tours are lost.

The ground-level stone vault with a large stove on the north side is illuminated through several slotted windows. The staircase to the first floor takes up the entire shorter wing. The upper floor is divided into two rooms. All of the floors above and the roof have not been preserved.
